Hi All,

I'm looking for recommendations for Amish or non-Amish cabin builders for a 16' x 24' skid foundation dried-in shell. Our property is south of Malone, NY.

Thanks!

Try messaging them in a bottle or smoke signals.

(little humor, I am certain they have websites)

My cabin is in Amish country in northern Oswego County. They have signs along the roadside advertising anything from honey and maple syrup to sheds and custom cabins. I would take a couple hours and drive around.

A little far from you but I know they have delivered to the old forge area. They buy them from an amish factory some where by Utica and deliver them all over. As a benchmark a 12x24 is about $3,800. That's with 6.5ft walls, 4x4 skids and normal plywood floor. No windows and I believe only one door. All can be custom ordered. One thing to keep in mind is the 12ft width is to the edge of the eaves not the walls.

We have a shed/cabin we got from this company. Its 10x14, 10ft to the walls. We got the 8ft walls, 6x6 runners and PT plywood floor. I believe it was about $3100 delivered a bit outside there 40mi range. It would have saved me about $500 by having a local amish build it and I would be responsible for deliver of an unknown amount.

Search for Amish builder update.......

Just got back from four days upstate. Found an Amish roofing business in Malone and got a recommendation. Spoke to the gentleman and I liked what he said. Went to two local lumber yards in Malone and asked for recommendations for builders and in the conversations asked if they also knew of any Amish builders. Both places recommended the gentleman whose name I had. So....... I'm putting together detailed plans and heading back up in a couple of weeks. Definitely on the right track!

This may be a good time for you to read up a bit about the Amish. You don't need to be an expert, but you don't want to be ignorant of their customs and beliefs.

Also, check with your town and county about their requirements. My township requires insurance, something the Amish don't believe in. We had to get a certificate from the Royal Order Amish in lieu.

Most do not drive, so they may need transportation.

It's worth the extra effort for the savings and quality you get.

Hi,
We're not far from you and had Adirondack Storage barns (in N.Lawrence and Chateaugay) build a storage shed "shell"with our specifications about 11 years ago.
We're doing all of the work-still!- but we're satisfied.
They were easy to work with and the price was right
Highly recommended.
Good luck.

Thank you smallworks..... I did visit them back in July and found a shed that would be my fall-back if an on-site cabin is too expensive. Turns out the builder I'm negotiating with and one of the sales people at AS are brothers!

UPDATE: I recently ordered a 14' x 24' shed/cabin from Adirondack Storage Barns with delivery planned for early July. This will be primarily a 3-season cabin. Upgrades include:
- 2x6 floor joists, wall studs and rafters. Joists are 12" on center, walls and roof are 16.
- 5/8" roof plywood
- 2" spray foam in floor with Advantec T&G subfloor
- (5) double-paned windoes and insulated door.
- Tyvek wrap
- metal roofing w/ ridge vent

I plan to use 5 1/2" of rock wool insulation in the walls and ceiling once I finish the electric wiring.

Planning the skid foundation now and waiting for spring to arrive.

Sounds like it will make a better lodge than our 4 season!

Geobuild. How far is the span on those 2x6 floor joists? I would put a skid right in the center along with in a few inches with 2x6 floor joists.

Hi Geobuild,
I am considering doing a very similar thing to you, in the same area near Malone NY.

Can you provide any feedback on your experience with ASB and any advice on what choices you are happy with and what you would do differently.

Thanks

Hi DerekG......

I'm very happy with ASB. I'm writing a thank you letter to them this week. Cabin was delivered July 14th and my wife and I and dog have spent about 10 nights in the shell.

I upgraded to the following from a shed:
- 2 x 6 walls/rafters/joists
- floor joists are on 12" centers (was not an upgrade)
- Advantec T&G subfloor
- metal roof and ridge vent
- (5) 30x44 Double Hung Insulated Windows
- 2" foam insulation in floor (R-14)
- DOW house wrap

We plan to use the cabin mostly from April-December with minor use in the dead of winter. I'm going to insulate with RockWool R-24.

Let me know if you have any other question, glad to help.

I had a local Amish fellow and his crew build the crushed stone foundation and skids and will have them back next summer to build a 10 x 12 screened-in porch added to the 14'x24' cabin.

I'm looking at the pictures and am curious.
What is that "blue" between the studs and sheathing ? Or is that wrap under the T-111 and that's all between the studs & cladding ?

Right now, I can't say I'd do anything differently but ask me again next summer after we've used the place more. We're in the Adirondack Park boundaries and followed the rules for a "Hunting/Fishing Cabin" so 500 sq ft max, off-grid. With the 14x24 cabin, 10x12 porch and small stair landing it will come in just under the max. I would have liked a 14x28 cabin but the porch would be too small. Always compromises!

Thanks Geobuild.
That's some very useful info and pics. I will likely do something like that next summer.

From the outside it looks fantastic, and from the looks of it and the specs you provide, it looks very solid.

I am curious what you plan on doing on the inside. Do you plan to run electricity to it? It looks big enough for a couple of comfortable rooms, kitchen area and bathroom. With the porch finished you will have a very nice cabin.

Any details you share will be appreciated since I think my plans will very closely follow yours.

Thanks again.

Sounds like from the regs that your 'hunting/fishing cabin has to be off-grid?
Are you allowed to have solar and/or a gen? Do you have good solar orientation?
Our place is 16x24, totally off-grid with 600w solar and a little inv/gen and rain barrel for utility water.
We do GREAT.

Off grid just means it cant have utilities connectd to it. So no power or city water. You can drill or dig a well and have solar. I think when you add a septic and interior flush toilet it starts to fall out of the "hunting and fishing cabin".
