Couple doors down from my house in the ghetto there is a new shingle roof going on, with no tar paper. Is that the new norm? House was bought by a contractor and torn down to the studs. Not a Harry Homeowner job, all the sheathing in new, the trucks have contractor names..

Can't tell by the blurry photo but those are shingles..

Lol, I've been going through phone tech hell trying to get my new phone working. I'm personal friends with half of India, or China, or wherever their tech support is.

The lens on my old phone is badly scratched, one of the reasons for the new one.

I have a friend that is a contractor and he told me that the only reason to use felt under the shingles is to keep the OSB/plywood dry while the shingles go on. He said that if it's going to be totally dry it's not needed but is usually used because customers think it needs to be there and expect it.

Tar paper really does nothing for water proofing after the shingles go on..as once it gets wet the roof has alreaty failed. I have seen no paper done on commercial jobs.

Personally I would use ice and water shield on any low pitch roof and/or 6ft up from the bottom.

Photo from New phone. They finished the roof though. Now I'm wondering about the ridge a foot or two up?
