More blurry pics (but I got my new phone yesterday!).

Remember my mile of 4" PVC pipe score? Well I'm down to my last 500 feet, and finally thought I found a use for some of it. My plan is/was to cut a slice out of it and use it for my rain gutter. Here is a test piece I tacked up, what do you think? Can't say I'm enamored with the look of it but it should work. Or should I just use this regular metal gutter for sale down the road? Gutter isn't expensive, just would like to use what I already have. Plus with 100' of roof line these 20' lengths would be easy and I could just glue them together.

I have never used PVC for gutters but I bet it's tough as nails. However metal gutters can be very thin and not take a ladder very well at all. I have had to replace some that where less than 7yrs old.

The PVC looks pretty marked up. You could sand it down or even paint them if you wanted something that looked better.

With the curve in the pipe can you get it to sit tight or is there a gap that will collect leaves and pine needles

If so I’d sell it and buy real gutters

Thanks for the input guys. Good point on the ladder, crushed a metal gutter or two myself. This PVC is thick, bet it could take it. Yes, would have to paint it, no biggie.

I originally cut a 5" hole in a 2x6, cut it in half through the hole, thinking I could nail them to the fascia and set the pipe in the half circle. But when I put the test piece up I just ran a screw through it into the fascia, about an inch down from the top of the PVC. Holds it tight against the fascia, no gap. Doing that every 2' might suffice, and if it did sag I could add the supports.

The slice I cut out of the pipe is less than half, closer to 1/4, so the outer edge of the gutter could stick up above the roof a bit. Uses twice as much pipe, but I have plenty..

I'd paint the side facing out black or dark brown and call it a day. I don't think it looks bad and I bet it holds up better than a lot of cheap material.

Odd ball thoughts running through my head. Maybe nothing. Will PVC Stand up to the daily sun in the long term? Become brittle?
And always worried about gutters and ice dams. Not knowing your location and if you have snow.
But, then again. Free! Always good. Best of wishes

Yes, some PVC I've had out in the sun for years is chalky on the outside, more brittle I don't know, stands to reason, I don't think it is designed for sun exposure. Good point, thanks. But paint would help, and it's mostly a shady area. No ice, no snow.

I was going to start on it today but I brought a new dresser out to the cabin. But it was too tall for it's spot by half an inch. Dang, so close. So I drove down to the shop and got a circular saw to cut an inch off the bottom. But I ran into one of the slider tacks and dulled the blade. So I pulled the tacks out, went back to the shop and put on a new blade. Made the cuts. Went to hammer the tacks back in, dropped one through a crack in the deck boards. Spent half an hour with a piece of tape on a coat hanger, got it up to the crack once, got some tweezers on it, dropped it. Gave up, put the dresser it without the slider tacks. took all morning. When I get over my depression I may go work on the gutter.

Don't ya' just hate that? Every trip I make to work on my cabin I take the stuff for three different jobs as, invariably, I'm going to miss, break or lose something I need to complete at least two of them. I'm truly envious of those that have a shop or hardware store close by. The closest for me is at least a 2-hour round trip- a big chunk out of the day (and very demoralizing).

PA, yeah in the beginning I had to haul all tools and materials from my house in town. Getting there and forgetting one little thing was a pisser. Now, a decade later, I have doubles of all tools and a good stack of materials on site.

So I went with my PVC pipe stash, cut 4 inch wide slices out of it, painted it black (black ABS would have been nice..), screwed it to the fascia and added support blocks. Just need down spouts, culverts across the road to the creek, some road base, finish the front wall and doors...

I think your idea is fantastic and a great way to repurpose materials! You will have to let us know how it stands up!

Thanks Skoot! Yeah the best part was reducing the stack of those 20 footers down to a couple dozen. I've moved them so many times I could probably go out for olympic pole vaulting.

Trying to figure out down spouts. The doors swing under the outlets (at the two corners), about 3 feet below them. Diagonally back to the wall I guess..

I think its a great use for surplus pipe! I definitely would paint the “outside” of it too. I’d be really careful and/or creative in adding downspout.

I’ve found our regular eavestrough downspout to be horrible thing at the cabin. Needs regular maintenance due to poor design/installation. Yet all i’ve ever seen is the same thing where the downspout is installed via creating a flange/ridge on the inside!!!! ( Usually siliconed in place. Maybe even screws protruding into the trough.)

That miniature weir around the downspout causes a slight ridge where shingle grit, our spruce needles and cones and muck pile up and backup water and muck along the trough. That or eventually a clog develops in the downspout itself.

I’ve though that just an open ended trough would be better than what we have. A waterside style of end curving down would be great!

Since ours always fills with water I’ve thought of just removing the end, extending the end or even drilling a few tiny holes in it to drain any standing water and reduce the weight and risk that the water goes out the attachment holes and rots the facia board.

Note: in the city i put that pastic eavestrough capping (full of holes) along one roofline beside a row of spruce trees. All that happened was that the capping itself collapsed into the trough. Totally useless. Maybe the metal stuff is better.

If you have pipe left consider selling it as the same toughing to a neighbour

...or turning it into a passive solar heater. (I’d like to build one of these with pipe or eavestrough downspout but as a fence/wall rather than attaching and therefore shading a cabin wall. Attaching it to a sun exposed cabin wall seems counterproductive.) Anyway plastic pipe seems like an ideal product to capture and transfer heat within a sealed unit.

Thanks Kin, good advice on the down spouts! I hadn't thought much about it yet but you're right, with the redwood duff I get they will easily clog if not right. And it's a 6-8' horizontal run back to the front wall, and only about 2' drop to stay above the doors.

Hmm, now I'm thinking maybe one of those chain things straight to the ground, I can move it when I want to open the door past 90 degrees.

I have time, I figured I'd just put 50 gallon barrels under the outlets for the first couple rains and see how it does.

Passive water heater, hmm, need to read up on that. Thanks again.

I had to look up adulated..

Anyway, I am ready for rain, gutter wise. I couldn't come up with an attractive way to get from the gutter to the ground, the door swing is in the way to go back to the wall. So, I have this movable flex pipe, for the rainy season. I don't normally need to swing those two end doors out that far but don't want to lose the option.

One of my neighbors facing the same issue they did the work done by gutter services, I ask their contact for you. You can also read some guides on google to find out the way.

hope it's beneficial for you

This is kind of a comedy. I bet there is not one cabin in his service area (Tampa FL) Like trying to sell swimming pools in the Yukon, fur coats in Miami, etc.

My thoughts too. I’ve called him with some gutter lengths I need, will put off telling Tampa gutter-guy my location as long as possible 😆. He has left me a message, will call him back…
