They are spreading across North America.

Boar War

“When people go out and shoot only one or two out of a sounder, then [the surviving boars] disperse into new territories, become nocturnal and become very wary of humans,” says Abramenko. “It makes it almost impossible to eradicate them.”

“You need to be doing what we call whole-sounder-removal,” says Brook. “You find 12 animals, you kill 12 animals.” ...

Alberta resorts to drones, remote cameras to track elusive wild boars | Calgary Herald

“Ironically, hunters may be playing a role in the animals’ spread from the traditional hot spots of Woodland and Lac St. Anne counties, he said.

“Hunting usually involves just removing one at a time, but ...”

“Hunters are not helping us with eradication. They’re actually making the problem worse.”

... The non-native animals were brought to Western Canada from Europe in the 1980s to be hunted for sport but were officially designated a pest in 2008 after numbers of them escaped from their enclosures.”

They are great hunting, great eating, but not native and people kinda like to sneak them in for good hunting. We are trying to eradicate them. We had some in my state, very few sightings, fish and wildlife was all over it. They said no license, no season, no limit, looks like we got it stopped. They are hard on everything.

They are one of the smartest animals in around. You wouldnt think so, but they are very intelligent.

I'm surprised to hear they are such a problem in Canada. I always thought they were more of a southern animal.

Some people thought privatizing the gains and socializing the risks was a good idea. Not just socialized risks. Passed losses over to the farming, hunting and other communities. The things are highly destructive. (They were legalized and then escaped from enclosures - of course.)

Hmmm. The Cdn Wild boar research centre is at the UofS...We submit any boar images/videos we get to the researchers there.

https://news.usask.ca/articles/research/2019/wild-pigs-invade-canadian-provincesan-em erging-crisis-for-agriculture-and-the-environment.php

We have them at our place. Fortunately so far they seem to be just passing through.

From what I read casual hunting really will not effectively control them as the sounders learn fast. Trapping and eliminating the whole sounder is more effective...

Like that one guy said:

“You find 12 animals, you kill 12 animals.”

Much like our problem pandemics. Either win the war hard and fast or expect to lose.

Dumbass NY state says to report them, don't shoot them. Easy for the authorities to tell you to watch the destruction. Screw them! I'm makin' bacon.

I have not. My neighbors sent me pics of about 20 standing in my driveway. They were escapees from a farm 2 miles away. The farmer had given up trying to capture them. So either the coyotes had a feast, or they are alive and well and living feral. Link below to info from NY D.E.C......2014.

Why not big bounties on them? But creative and not continuous or people will “game the system” so they can create a great income stream for themselves.

Maybe separate regional hunting licences specifically for wild pigs and a delayed prorated bonus to be paid to the hunters once an area is proven to be feral free for a few years.

Eg. Register to hunt this block, submit proof of kills, share in million dollar bonus after the block is 4 years feral-free.

Giant Feral Pigs On The Loose In Canada :: Guns.com

There were doubts surrounding the pigs’ ability to survive in Canada’s cold climate; the wild pigs not only survived, but they increased their body size and fat levels to stay warm. While pigs south of the border can reach 350 pounds, pigs up north have been recorded at over 600 pounds!

CAN THEY BE HUNTED?
... “If you want more wild pigs, have a hunting season,” he said. ...

“You could kill off 70% of a wild pig population each year and still have a larger population the next year,” he said.

Because they want them gone, no revenue stream, if they can have hunters help for free, all the better.

Megan, be careful on feeders, it will bring in bears too and they wont leave and become a problem till they are move by fish and wildlife and the bear manages to return to its exact location before the move and within day and then the problem bear its exterminated. Feeders will does bring in smaller unwanted varmints, mice rats etc.

Best thing you can do is to continue to let the wildlife fend for themselves.

Pigs are destructive, extremely smart, dont for a minute, think a pig is a dumb animal. They are good eating too. If unchecked, they will destroy your landscape from rooting and they breed pretty rapidly too. They are not native here.

Hogs are running wild in the U.S.—and spreading disease
By Jason Bittel

Today, around six million feral swine run hog wild in at least 35 U.S. states,
where they can grow more than five feet long and weigh more than 500 pounds. They’re adaptable creatures, capable of thriving in nearly any environment. For instance, the animals are also increasingly widespread on myriad Caribbean Islands and in Mexico, from the Baja to the Yucatán Peninsula, as well as Canada, where even deep snow and bitter cold can't slow them down. (Read how feral hogs are moving into Canada and building “pigloos.”)

Opinion: Watch out for Super Pigs! : NPR

"Wild hogs feed on anything," says Dr. Brook. "They gobble up tons and tons of goslings and ducklings in the spring. They can take down a whitetail deer, even an adult, not to mention the crop damage."

KinAlberta, have a good buddy from the island of Kauai and he hunted wild pigs with his uncle, he said they were so good. They could open a season on them, they did it in my state when they were first seen and it was no caliber restrictions, no license, no limit, no season. Had to be legal access places (no trespassing), ie permission or public land and sun up to sundownand expanding bullets (no aminal suffering) but aside from those rules, it was open season.

“Nearly 300 native plant and animal species in the U.S. are in rapid decline because of feral swine, and many of the species are already at risk, according to Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Massive, destructive wild boars have U.S. on guard against Alberta 'immigrunts' | Edmonton Journal

“Many things might indeed be bigger in Texas, but when it comes to wild boars Alberta’s superpigs are twice the size of those thriving in the Lone Star State.

And that’s got wildlife officials across the U.S. worried these massive northern prairie porkers — with razor-sharp tusks and weighing up to 630 pounds — could soon pose a multi-billion dollar threat if they become unwanted ‘immigrunts’ by crossing the 49th parallel.“

It has gotten so bad in texas, they go on helicopter patrol like in vietnam and just gun them all down, leave them to rot, till into soil./ Even at that, will only slow it down. I dont think it will ever be eliminated.

Pigs are extremely smart animals.
