This what we are having to do also for out small cabin/ sheds. Area is in flood plain so cant be permanent building. We are putting 3 sheds 35 ft from our small creek. NC has newish law that permits are not needed for primitive camp structures - no plumping or grid power, so compo...

I know I am a little late, but I am also in the early planning stages and just went through this run around with the local building department of residential vs. habitable cabin/shed. They (county building dept. in MI) basically said if you sleep in it, it is habitable and it has to be built to ...

...ond floor (Upstairs bedroom) will have a 42” knee wall and the same vaulted 8/12 scissor truss. This will result in a 12 foot tall exterior wall, two foot taller than the living room side. The building will have many large glass windows. I have pre-purchased most of them from a variety of sources for pennies on the dollar. Over the last year almost every Craigslist ad in my area th...

Nate R thank you. We have shared ownership of 60 acres in Shawano county. My wifes brother already built a garage kit cabin on it. I'm leaning towards the portable building for tax reasons as well as permit type reasons. Looks like it would just be classified as an outbuilding and we can continue as agricultural land.

95. Posted: 12 Apr 2019 14:33 - Properties / Wondering about Vermont
No town zoning means you have to adhere to state zoning, at-least here in VT. Almost all town without zoning I've seen don't have a building department and can't issue permits. You have to go to state level for that. However I do agree double or triple check before shelling out money. Last I talked t...

...ear you will have a center beam as well as the two long side beams. The 8 foot spacing on the piers seems a bit wide. But that depends on variables such as ground load bearing capacity, snow load, building width, beam size, how the roof weight is supported, etc. As NorthRick said, "Need more info." Since you are using 6x6 piers a triple layer laminated beam with plywood spa...

No zoning does not mean no building inspections and no codes. Know the difference before you shell out any money. Call the local county/town building inspector and ask questions. My property has no z...

...not year round) so has specific options not allowed for full time. Oh, and off-grid. You are really dealing with two levels of government regulations - the overall provincial rules which include the building code, waterfront regulations (which were really really tightened up a few yrs ago), and the local regulations - assuming there are any. It is really important to study the provincial...

...nt to build it your self why start with a kit? I could see starting with a set of plans but there also easy to draw your self. First things first...have you talked to the local code enforcement and building inspector? You will need permits and you will want to get to know the laws before you start to build. What part of the state?

...recreational cabin plus the rules on where/how to build an outhouse and asked where the local bylaws restricted this. They didn't (although I did need to get a septic survey to obtain the cabin building permit)! Good news is that we then developed a good working relationship with the local authorities and have a lovely waterfront cabin! Obviously your mileage will...

Socceronly, I am in the very early stages of get a plan together for a small cabin also. I went through the same thing with the building and zoning department saying I need to be at least 1000 sq ft, and have a kitchen and bathroom area (even without electricity or running water) and if I was going to sleep there I wo...

Hello! I have been lurking and reading for some time. I don't want to interfere with the OP and their objective in opening this topic, but I'm curious if anyone ha experience in Quebec with building in a ZEC, a "territoire non organise" and if the same local permit processes apply or if you're only subject to the provincial regulations. If anyone ...

Quoting: ICCNo. Nothing in the IRC that is directly aimed at sheds. The IRC mainly addresses one or two family habitable buildings. I still plan on sitting down with the IRC, but what is the definition of "one family habitable building"? I mean, if I put a couch, desk, and wood stov...

No. Nothing in the IRC that is directly aimed at sheds. The IRC mainly addresses one or two family habitable buildings. Requirements for sheds that need permits can have rules that vary widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. The local officials are the best source for what will...

...t end for years (retired now) most cities/counties have a specific soft allowance without a permit. In our area it is 200sqft with an eave height not to exceed 14' That allowed for a very nice building at our primary residence. This summer we hope to build a woodshed/shop at the cabin. The county there also allows 200 sqft, one story without a permit...

109. Posted: 21 Mar 2019 07:53 - Properties / Suburban cabin on 2 acres
You should really see what they require for the permit process. If they require a stamped building plan, even for a shed you can kiss $5k budget good by. If you decide to go no permit i would make sure the town knows and make sure that means...

Hello. This is my first post. I am so excited to have found this site. I'm planning on building a smallish cabin next to our smallish house as a quiet break from the kids and wife. I figure I could do a shed/cabin for $5k where a proper addition would be 5-10x that. We...

To me all those details are more important than the layout of the buildings, etc. What happens when someone dies or gets divorced, or has to move because of circumstances nobody can foresee right now? There should be definite rules spelled out as to how a...

Can you share what size/type lumber and spacing was required for the triangles? ...

My understanding was that in Ontario, hunt camps do need building permits, just the oversight and conditions (e.g. regarding access) are less onerous than for a full-fledged seasonal or permanent dwelling. The only thing that doesn...

120. Posted: 10 Feb 2019 14:23 - Cabin Construction / Milling local lumber: cost effective?
