...der to be driven on the roads. If you build something larger you'll need a special permit each time you move it. Also, some municipalities require that a main house be built before an accessory building. I would advise going through a proper permitting process. A building inspector can prevent a lot of costly mistakes.

Have you enquired of the local municipality officials what is involved for obtaining a building permit? I have friends in Inverness county who built a few years ago. They had a DIY plan they made themselves for a home of about 800 sq ft. IIRC, I think they pai...

Here in Ontario if you can keep it hidden for 75 years I believe, the property becomes yours and the building is allowed to stay. My wife knew of one old structure that sat for I think 73 years before it was found out. I think the family thought it was legal all along and went to inquire abo...

You should check the town website. Look for areas with no building zoning. There is some state rules on seasonal cabins that are pretty lax unless you get into septic and wells. Any structures that will be a primary dwelling get into some pretty sta...

Ask the city/town or county building department what you can do. Some places have more strict regulations when it comes to foundations. Some people also build w/o a permit. Some jurisdictions make you t...

... be above board code wise it would have to be 2x6 construction to get the added r-value the thicker walls provide with the correct insulation. At least that is the way it is for new homes, I assume a building permit for a cabin if used year round would be the same. I like the idea of a metal roof, over shingles for ice, snow and in the summer shingles start to get moss co...

I don't know what county in the UP you are in, but I do know that Menominee County states that --- a building permit is required for construction other than detached accessory structure under 200 sq. ft. The key word in that is "accessory". The under 200 sq ft ...

So I called this morning. As for Ashe County, NC, Minimum Sq Ft. is around 256' or close to that number. Building permit would be about $380 for minimum Sq Footage. (cost increased per Sq Ft but nowhere close to $20k-30k) Septic is required for all houses, can't ...

Builders who concentrate on sheds, garages and other outbuildings etc. have plenty of experience working without plans. I think still under discussion, but i) might be an example for yo...

... all gas ranges had air exhaust vent hoods and they were used. It’s worse in winter and worse with energy efficient designs that limit air infiltration. That’s not a reason to return to building houses like we did a hundred years ago. It is food for thought. As for fuel-burning appliances that have oxygen depletion sensors, those do have some merit. However, one can still ...

Another thing what govt could have done is create a choice - full scale building permit and a cabin permit at a reduced rate. Problem be solved. Everything would be accountable, yet more common c...

Example, we have 100 acres in North Kawartha and the bylaw says with that size property we can build a "hunt camp" which can be essentially any size BUT we do need building permits and septic ( I haven't looked to see if they are OK with a composting toilet) And to be honest, it is better to go legal than potentially get fined by t...
