241. Posted: 28 Feb 2019 13:11 - Cabin Construction / A-frame construction and the Building Code
...p a 20x32 a-frame. There is some unorganized land around me where I could use unstamped lumber from a lumber mill to build, but parcels are scarce. Does anyone have any experience being involved in a building an a-frame where you had to have a building permit and inspections? Can you share what size/type lumber and spacing was required for the triangles? ...

My current plans for the spring break trip in addition to checking out lots is a stop at the Ferry Co. Building Dept. for some permitting questions, and the Northeast Tri-County Health District to see if they'll let me build my own grey water only septic system.

243. Posted: 24 Feb 2019 18:13 - Properties / Article on hunt camps, Ontario - but sign of things to come?
..., how big it was, and whether the bureaucrats are trying to play dirty by tattling (inaccurately?) to MPAC. (An important point, to be sure). My understanding was that in Ontario, hunt camps do need building permits, just the oversight and conditions (e.g. regarding access) are less onerous than for a full-fledged seasonal or permanent dwelling. The only thing that doesn...

How can someone go about finding out if can build a small cabin on property but avoid taxes and building permits. I’ve heard the county my property is in has a 200sq ft rule that applies as long as not lived in permanently. But I would like to make sure before co...

I also should mention that we're a bit off the beaten path so don't expect any inspections and wouldn't need a building permit.

248. Posted: 10 Feb 2019 14:23 - Cabin Construction / Milling local lumber: cost effective?
You don't specify the planned use, structural 2x lumber or non-structural? Do you need a building permit or will there be any inspections? If so you may not be able to use the ungraded lumber for any structural purposes. If you want to have the timber milled i...

I'm also not concerned about adding on in the future due to the issue of not being able to get a building permit. Which is also why adding an attached screen porch probably isn't an option even though I would be awesome to have in the summer. socceronly- that'...

I guess that's fair. But in my opinion if they wont issue you a building permit due to your location then there should be other options besides building a tiny structure. Either way though i'll be happy with the tiny...

251. Posted: 21 Jan 2019 11:31 - Properties / Hunt Camp - any experiences?
IDK anything about hunt camps. If you buy in a unorginized township in Northern Ontario you do not need a building permit but you do need to draw up a plan and submit it to the local municipality. This is for a change in the bylaws. It's been about 25 years since we did it...

In contrast, actually moving the lot line so the laneway is on the "right" property would require a lot more discussion, higher fees, may or may n...

254. Posted: 27 Oct 2018 15:30 - Properties / Fire Access Road
Thanks for all the input. It may not be that bad. We definitely want access for emergency vehicles, but needing a 750,000lb fire truck access for one 12x12 building is a bit overkill. The terrain is very stony and naturally compacts hard. The thing is that this very small building doesn't even require a permit...

I live in NH and make frequent trips to VT, and will be building my own cabin in northern NH next year very close to the VT border. I think you will absolutely benefit from seeing prospective lots without snow cover. There's ledge, seasonal...

Well, some folks will disagree, but many if not most of the rules or methods that are laid out in the building codes are related to safety. Safety as in the walls, floors or roofs are constructed to be strong enough to sustain the typical weather and the typical uses of typical people. Safety...

As for not wanting to have to deal with rules and fees, many places that may not have building permit fees may still have a state level building code that, officially, must be followed. My NM county can be rather lax in enforcing code complian...

I have just closed down our off-grid, water access cabin and will now spent the winter planning to build a small "accessory building" designed to enhance "the occasional recreational use" of our property and "primary cabin". From what I've read so far, these seem to b...

Also, some municipalities require that a main house be built before an accessory building. I would advise going through a proper permitting process. A building inspector can prevent a lot of costly mistakes.
