Whats a cabin without a boat? Google "Svensons free boat plans" for hundreds of free boat plans, including a few older style canoes and kayaks. I chose and built the "polliwog" which is a 12 foot runabout. The plans are mostly from the 40s and 50s, so they have classic lines. My boat runs and handles like a dream, but it was also a lot of work to build, but a good winter project while the snow flies.

Build away! After my first deployment to Iraq I built a 10' skiff from some free plans I found online. It's about 3 1/2' wide. All total I spent about US$150.00 for everything, plywood, fiberglass, resin, paint, and seats. You can see me in the back of the boat standing up.

If you have the time to build, I highly recomend a project like this. I've since added a 40# thrust electric trolling motor and a 425 car battery. A single charges gets me about 6 hours of actual run time and scoots about fast enough to create a wake.

Here's another picture of us later that same afternoon, but we added my son into the mix. Right there we have 500+ pounds of people plus all of our fishing gear and a 15qt. cooler with ice and drinks that my son is sitting on.

That's a nice little boat you've got there! How many hours to build it and did you get the plans from svensons?

Yes, the plans are from Svensons, its the "polliwog" although I stretched it to 12'. It planes and handles very well. I don't know how many hours I put into it, but it was plenty. Only regret, should have put an oak or mahogany trim/rub rail around it. Also a fake mahogany deck would have been awesome. I also glassed all the seams and put an aluminum strip along the keel for better abrasion resistance. I may yet take a whack at a kayak, but a newer more modern design than Svensons has, but for now, my cabin will take priority since my "deadline" to finish is this year, and with spring still a way away, I'm gettin' anxious to mget back at it. Make sure to post if you get a boat project up and running, but no cursing me halfway through the project. (;-)
