The internet is not giving easy answers to what might be the best wood filler to use on aged wood to fill cracks and holes before painting over with a new coat on exterior trim and wood columns. Do any of you have any suggestions based on your experience with the products?

If it's outside and to be painted I would think a good paintable acrylic caulk would be suitable. It is what windows and doors are sealed with when it will be painted over. Just let it cure according to the directions.

There is Marine Epoxy (iirc the West System); one of the few products Ive used that actually exceeded the claims. Pricey but worked on my vintage 1963 mahogany runabout.

Is this for a cosmetic fix only? Or are you looking for something more durable/hard? If it's just cosmetic, stuff like Elmer's brand wood filler (a thick paste) will work. It'll dry hard, and then you can sand it as needed. If you need something more durable/hard, then you'll want an epoxy wood filler.
