I'm new to this forum and think it's great. I'd like to build a getaway cabin in either notheren NH, Maine or VT. I don't want to have to deal with septic and waste water issues, foundations etc. just want a cabin with an outhouse, electricity and running water optional for now. Any advice where to look and where NOT to look?

It really depends on what you are planning to build, what you actually label it, and what town you are in. In almost every town you can build a "shed" up to a certain size without a permit. In my case in VT..the town I am in it is 100 sq ft maximum "shed" (for storage "wink") without having to obtain a permit. My town also allows up to 720 sq ft "recreation" camp, for occasional use only, which does require a permit but does not have to meet all the residential building codes. BUT, the camp would require septic and well...so, I am going the no permit "shed" route...nobody will be lookin...solar panel... composting toilet....my weekend getaway.
Northern Maine I believe you will find the "no permit shed" rule to be larger...maybe 200 sq ft...but will vary by town..you would have to check with the town to see what size shed can be put up without a permit. And also the camp rules are a bit more relaxed way up there...many outhouses up there. Vermont pretty tough on septic rules etc..NH I don't know really.

I read that in NH they define a "recreational cabin" as something 400 sq ft or under. I just want to avoid a septic system and all the other code trappings.

Composting toilets are more acceptable than ever now.... pretty much everywhere in recreational cabins...but make sure to check everything with the town before buying the land.....usually building codes do not apply as well...

That's kind of what I was thinking. I know they use them in the White Mountain National Forrest at some of the Ranger buildings.
