Hello folks. New member to the group here; my name is Albert. I recently put an offer in on a cabin in New Jersey and one thing that has been baffling me is the uniqueness of this particular cabin. It’s very different from the traditional cabins I’ve seen online. It’s just a square cabin approximately 20‘ x 28‘ and over the years porches had been added on and closed in. The current owner family said it was used by their family as a summer cottage (purchased by her parents in the early 70’s) and it looks like in 2003 one of the brothers moved in as his permanent residence. He recently passed which is why it’s for sale.

That said, I find the tongue and groove 1x an interesting choice for walls. They apparently also didn’t believe in rafter and/or collar ties in the 1920’s when this was built as the roof has sagged. That’s on my repair list.

I’m just curious to see if anyone has seen other cabins like this, etc. I’m interested in the history of my potential new home and it’s “design”! any input is much appreciated.

Welcome, looks like a nice place.
My brother in law just tore down a old farm house, and under the drywall were 1" tongue and grove boards. Lumber wasn't so expensive back then, and boards were cut thick.

Looks like a nice custom log cabin you have there, not sure there is much more to it than that. People built what they saw in their minds back then with the materials they had.

That is a butt and pass (butt-n-pass) log cabin, looks like someone wanted some more space so added a few shed type extensions. It looks nice. Is it solid? How are the lower logs?

I'm guessing from the 30's maybe 40's?

In Alaska, that would be called an Alaskan rambler. Very common to see with add ons and extensions built over time.

I think it would be cool to see what the original log cabin looked like before the renovations and additions over the years.

Hi folks! Thanks for the input. I’m 1 week away from closing (real estate) on her. The cabin was built in 1922. It’s definitely a quaint little place but needs a LOT of work. For one the roof structure is bowing and needs rafter ties and collar ties and insulation in the ceiling. Not to mention way too much overgrowth on the trees. Anyhow, I’ll see what I can find on Alaskan ramblers and butt & pass cabins. Every cabin idea I see is nothing like mine (I sometimes need visuals).

I wouldn’t spend to much time researching Alaskan rambler. It’s simply a term applied to any cabin that has been significantly modified over time by additions and modifications. The term could be applied to any style of cabin that has had such modifications.

Congrats on the closing. The cabin looks like it has a lot of character, and with all the work you'll put into it, it'll definitely be YOURS.

TOC-NJ, the Log Home Builders AssociationURL, the butt-n-pass is their preferred and taught method.
