Seeing just a bit of a Celtic theme there Malamute :-)
I think this music is where the Appalachian hill music had it's roots...

I don't listen to much out here, but when I do it ranges SRV and Elmore James are good, got a box set of Blind Willie McTell that I like to throw in. Keb' Mo' is another flat picker I like. For fingerstyle guitar - it's Michael Hedges mostly. I will put the ipod on shuffle and just let it go too, then it's anything feom Zep to Dido to Yardbirds to Sade (I like most any music). Oh, for Appalachain, small group out of Kentucky called Zoe Speaks - GREAT harmonies sung by those two!

I am learning about a lot of great new groups from this thread, a nice side benefit! You're like me, Anything from Zep to John Lee Hooker (although Sade wouldn't make my list :-)

Yes, I believe Celtic is the roots of Appalachian hill music, and by decent, country.
A radio program I listen to (Thistle and Shamrock, on NPR) had a weekly spot dedicated to the Appalachian music and the connections to traditional Celtic.
I listen to other stuff, just find much of the Celtic music to be relaxing.

Music for me, whether I am playing guitar or just listening, is spiritual. Like being out here in the woods, it connects me to the world in ways I cannot explain. So yes it is great. I do like Celtic as well, there is a French guitarist, Pierre Bensusan, plays in DADGAD tuning, a good bit of traditional Celtic as well as some great originals. Can't access youtube from here so can't give you a link, but there was a vid of him playing 'The Alchemist' that is awesome.

Sitting next to the fire in my little cabin.....
Its raining, about 36 degrees outside; some large heavy snowflakes are floating down. The fire's been going for a couple hours, its now 62deg inside, but I'm cozy in the proper clothing. I picked up some apples at a fruit stand on the way up, they are so crisp and delicious.
Dave Matthews Band "Crash" is cranking thru some old ADVENT speakers from ~1980. Those speakers never knew they were gonna play to an iPod. Unconstrained volume level is the ONLY benefit to my wife not being here. I wish she was, but she's off chapperoning at a Girl Scouts camp.
I have a glass with a sip of Johnny Walker Black Label scotch whiskey in it. Tomorrow a friend is coming to visit and we're gonna ride dirtbikes over the mountain. Weather forecast is for SUN, it will be crisp, and with all the awesome fall colors....it's going to be great! I can't say how great it is to have a cabin, I suppose only "cabin people" can understand.
