Hey guys,

What do you do with your whole-house water filter when you're not using the cabin? I go up to my place once a month or so in PA. I drain the water but keep the crawl space heater on ~47 degrees or so. I'm not sure what the right thing is to do with the water filter when I leave. I've left it in and not drain the canister and I've also drained the canister and put it back in. I'm thinking neither of those is a good option. Is there another option? Chlorine tablet perhaps?

Wondering what you guys do.

Thanks!

I mounted mine upside down so when the water lines drain, so does the filters.

I flush the pressure tank when I turn water on and then run water for a few minutes to flush lines. I usually replace filter in a day or two. We get sediment from spring.

Small warning here, I did that (pulled the filter in either September or the very beginning of October) at our cabin and returned in the spring to find it didn't dry out thoroughly before the first freeze and it flaked the ceramic coating on part of it. Our cabin is further north than yours though. We pull our filters on the last trip of the year, bring them to our house to store, and take them back in the spring.

Since the filters are so slow 'air' drying isnt there a possibility of mold or something growing in the filter?
Seems 'force' drying them in, say, a food dehydrator would be safer. Maybe even 'storing' them in water in the fridge at home?

All great points! I'm thinking maybe a rotation of filters so there is always a dry one ready to use at the cabin while I take the wet one home to dry. It's not worth risking mold by leaving it in wet or in stagnant water. And I really don't feel like replacing with a new filter every time I go. Thought about leaving it in the kitchen sink drying rack, but I don't heat the main part of the cabin when I'm not there and it could definitely freeze before it dries.
