Hey all
I'm overrun with ferns. I own a 5 gallon backpack sprayer which is awesome and allows me to cover massive areas quickly and easily.
I read that vinegar will work? If that's true and anyone used that then what percentage? I see 45% and 6% online obviously in huge price difference. Anyone had any luck with a specific mix or percentage?

I just mow them in areas I want to keep open and let them be in areas I don't. Mow them after they first come up in the spring and they don't really regrow that year. After a few years they will stop coming up.
However, where I'm at, grass takes over so you have to periodically mow through the summer season anyway.

my area is woods - rocky and not flat. My fear is to mess up a mower (even if I buy a cheap electric one just for this..)

Unfortunately I have found that useing non glyphosate weed killers dont actualy kill the plant..they just kill what's above the ground. But you can give it a try. There is strong vinegar available at box stores typicaly.
Why not just leave the ferns?

I just weedwhip mine when they start growing and they don't grow back that season. My trails completely overgrow if I let it, but once a year with the weed whip is all I need to clear the areas I want

We don't deal with Ferns here, but I have found that vinegar just doesn't work. I have tried the strong stuff, the less strong stuff, mixed with dish soap, ect ect.. It kills some stuff, but mostly just stunts the plants. They come right back after a month or so.

I guess I should have clarified. Our land is also too uneven for a mower. I use a weedwacker. Cut them down in the spring and they won't regrow that year.

Could a change of the soil’s ph along a perimeter deter their growth?
