Any solution to prevent metal roof screws from backing out? Bit of silicone caulk on the threads?
Good practice says to replace with larger diameter screws but I don’t want a repeat performance

Mine did the same thing, I just snugged them down. Large diameter screws on my cabin already. Its the lower end, wind vibrates it I think. I snugged them back down.

Thermal expansion & contraction is the cause. And not every screw always loosens in my experience.
Retighten. Sometimes they will not repeat loosening.
Some sealant squirted into the screw hole and reinsertion of the screw works well. But, if the screws are galvanized, not stainless steel, the acetic acid that is released by the curing silicone may corrode the screw. Use a caulk that emits no acetic acid (vinegar) odor.

I'm not a fan of silicone. I'd try some type of adhesive caulk. Lots to chose from.
Also, and nothing you can fix easy, what the screws are biting into matters. They need to be fully embedding in the wood beneath the metal.

tightened mine after 20 years. About 25% loose, about 12-15 needed replaced with bigger screws

Mine was just the lower run along the bottom, its as if the vibration from wind. All other screws were fine.

That's interesting. Mine have never moved. I have one in every valley and at the seems. Maybe the OP just used too few.

Dave, a few locals told me the same thing, next run, some were loose, but barely. Now some gooey butyl tape around the threads... like a "locktite" for roofing screws.

That style of ribbed roofing isnt ideal as the screws really have nothing to seal on and you cant tighten them down properly being in the top of the rib..with out a ribbed closure under the pannel.

I have no screws on the ribs, they are on the flats, this is what the mfg. screw schedule told me to do.
They do have some little stich screws for some peaks where the sections overlaps to the next panel. Stich screws are also used on the cap to secure cap to top of ridges.
