anyone recall the designs used in the middle-east and deserts of africa? i saw a design years ago in a book i cannot find now. picture this:
house in section, long axis left to right on paper
prevailing winds are left to right (west to east) along axis
tower/chimney type structure at west end with opening facing the prevailing winds, not 'up', like a snorkel on your favorite 4wd truck:

near the bottom of the 'chimney' is a water feature, something that pulls water from below, circulating (now 12v pump, old days a windmill) like a cascade or fountain effect. the air coming down the chimney is forced out past/through the water feature.
house interior along long axis is cooled, and doors/windows at east/right ends are left open to allow for the cross-convection to occur.
wish i could find the design...

The evaporating of water to provide cool air works well in a dry climate. They are used in the SW USA. Fan driven. The downside is they do not work when the humidity rises and they consume water, not a great thing in a desert.

Build on a concrete slab. The thermal mass will stay cool. Our cabin it can be in the 90's outside. You come in and sit on the cool concrete and you'll be ready to go back outside in little to no time at all.

Update on our place we insulated our cabin and I am amazed at how much cooler it stays it doesn't start getting warm until about 3:00 pm and then it is so hot outside we don't want to do anyting anyway. I am going to see how the ac works this weekend, plus we have a solar attic fan in the ceiling they are a little pricey but well worth it they take alot of heat out and we have 16ft ceilings so it is barrable without the ac.

Oh and I wanted to say Justs idea about an auto ac hooked to a honda is a great idea and I can run that off my gasifier for free.

I use 12 volt solar fans I cobble together. In the afternoon around 3 or 4 I will use that fan to defrost the frozen chicken or whatever I am going to grill. It helps a bit.

Having spent a little time in Virginia, I know the styfling heat and drenching humidity, if you stayed in your air conditioned house it was ok, but step outside and it felt like you were melting, that is why I moved back to Washington State, none of that sweltering soggy stuff to deal with.

I'm in a similar situation and am about to add a room to the cabin in semi tropical Australia by enclosing the carport. My idea is to build a cellar under the new room, then have a floor mounted fan under a grill to draw cool air from the cellar.
For those without a cellar, it might be enough to have a long metal pipe buried deepish underground and draw air though this via a 12v fan mounted into the floor. The metal would be the cooler stable underground ambient temperature and would theoretically cool the air to a similar temp.

here in Tennessee its the same problem r13 on celings and walls, box fan run by 175 watt pv and 4 110 am hr agm batteries but it still hot, genie and a/c maye in my future
