I am looking at the jotul combifire units. Unit is going to service about 300 sq ft. I would like it to hold coals overnight. Could you please tell me about your experiences. Some of the desire is for viewing of the fire that these units allow, plus closing it up for normal use. When starting in a cold cabin is it a pain with the way the door folds down for access? Any perspective is appreciated.

It wont hold coals overnight.

It's not built for efficiency. It's built for ambiance.

Any ideas on best of both worlds then? I think I've seen some 602s with glass section in the door.

You got it...a Jotul 602.

Just be aware, anything with a small fire box will struggle to hold coals overnight. You have a small place and will cook yourself out if you get a firebox that can do an overnight burn. So I don't think best of both worlds is going to work for you. It's going to be one or the other...

And the quality of your build; the airtightness and insulation, especially the ceiling (and the ceiling height, since hot air rises a cath ceiling will need the air kicked around to mix ime) will add into that effectiveness of the burn.
If all that is good then the absorbed heat of all inside, including a stove gone 'out' will hold the temp stable quite a long time.

We put in a BlazevKing Sirocco 20.2, 3 years ago, love this stove! Ours is similar to THIS ONE but has a solid base. It really will hold fire for 20 hours plus... and put out heat during that time.

Here's a plug for the Jotul 602. Not sure it would hold coals overnight (8 hours). Depends also on the outside temperature. At our cabin (480 sq ft, logs with lots of windows) with outside temps a bit below freezing, it is typically in the high 60s in the morning, and we do not pack the firebox at all. I suspect that if we packed the firebox and closed all the windows, we could easily stay in the mid-60s by morning with overnight lows in the teens. Might get a chance to try that this coming winter.

Just one data point. We love the simplicity of the 602 - easy to load, very little smoking, glass front. Not as efficient as some of the newer catalytic designs, but does well for us.
