Looking at possibly doing some research on 4 Rolls L16's FLA's. This will take place in my unheated garage. I want to do the testing at room temperature, currently the garage is unheated and minus 5C. As this is short term just looking for something quick and easy. I have a couple of thoughts. Building a small insulated enclosure, using a old chest freezer. These would have some sort of heater. Then I thought about wrapping with an electric blanket? I know it might take sometime but what are your thoughts and any other ideas? Thanks

You really cant seal up a enclosure with FLA unless there sealed lead acid and I dont believe they are. They need to vent gases. But the good thing is flooded cell batteries dont need heat in the winter like lithium.

Not totally sealed, but something to reduce the heat loss. Thanks

Are you just trying to lessen the performance loss? My FLA batteries are stored in a steel box outside in the cold (-40C this winter). The batteries still worked fine, but lost like %30.

For me, it was just easier to put a bigger bank to compensate instead of messing with heating and the extra power.

Just want to get them to standard temperature, so I don't have to calculate the change with temperature. Only for test purpose. Our daily temperatures can change 20C in a day or two, but with the mass of the battery could take days for battery temperature to change. If I can have them at a consistent temperature my measurement would be more accurate.

-40c is prety damn cold. If your bank cant afford to loose 30% at that temp it's to small.

Test each battery separately by warming it in the house for a couple days for a saturation temp, then out to garage?
I wanted my LA bat-bank to be pretty well matched as the bank is only as good as its weakest battery.

Wife would not be happy with batteries in the house, and not that safe.

Would be easier to test in summer

I’ve stored my fla boat batteries in the house for years. Unless you’re charging them hard they are perfectly safe.
Can’t help with the wife part

But I would be testing in my basement if I were you with no concerns

An insulated box (make sure its vented) with a heating pad below the batteries would an option.

If you are just looking for something temporary, could use 2" foam. Cut one piece the proper size for the batteries to sit on, then put a heating pad on that, then the batteries on top. Cut proper size foam for the sides (taller than the batteries) and simply hot glue it to the sides of the batteries. Finally, cut a lid and just loosely place it on top (for venting).

When the time comes to take it apart, a little isopropyl alcohol in a ketchup squirt bottle. Squirt it between the foam and batteries and the hot glue will release immediately.

Right off start with easy.
Put the batteries on the workbench (floors are Cold) with a gentle heater and plop a cardboard box over em. Have thermometer inside; pop the box, check the temp, etc.
