Anyone have any good alternatives to Hardi Plank?

I was planning to use 4x8 pieces, they just look.. "blah". I just cannot think of a durable alternative that does not cost an arm and a leg.

I love the idea Stoney posted about, but have not heard anything from him, so figured he does not check back that often.. heh. I also do not see a more cost-effective way to hide wiring or insulation in his plan.

So, I am back to normal framing and hardi plank :p

Has to be able to withstand Texas heat and rain.

I really like the look of the hardi plank lap siding. Not the 4x8 sheets but the individual "boards". It is a very affordable siding and looks great. Fire resistant too. In my area, I think a 12' peice offering about 6" or so of true coverage runs about $7.50USD. I decided on 1x8 T&G pine as an exterior finish, but I could have gone either way.

I wonder what the cost difference might be

Hardi panels is great stuff, but its heavy. Do you have lots of buddies? And cutting it is a nightmare. Get a cheap saw with a diamond bit of get their shears. If you use a diamond bit, use a face mask. Concrete dust can lead to a debilitating lung disease called silicosis.

I have about 6-12 guys that are going to help.

My concern is that anything else would deteriorate in this Texas heat.

Hardie plank is the way to go. Hardie makes several different styles see a supplier.

Hardie plank not the 4x8 Hardie panel.

I install plank by myself so if you have two or three helpers it is easy. Read, understand and follow Hardie's installation instructions.

Solosider makes hanging the planks easy even by yourself. I did our 16x30 cabin using these. They are adjustable for the amount of overlap desired.

available through Amazon

Is there a big difference in price of plank vs the 4x8 boards? I have not tired to price out the planks. I assume that is like adding vinyl siding, which I understand.

Thanks guys,

The plansk are much easier to use. They are in 12 foot length and still pretty heavy. But its much easier to use than the 4X8, 4X9 sheets etc. Easier to do window cut outs etc. But of course, you nweed your full sheating under it, ie OSB, plywood etc. Probably 1/2" min. Then your vapor barrier and your hardi board. A small pile of the stuff covers a large area and it lays low, ie doesnt stick way beyond the corner trim.

Well, I will have radiant barrier and vapor barrier. I want to do whatever I can to shield the heat.

I'll do the math on the planks, tyvm!
