This is the cabin Im buying. Is the blue thing a water pump? There is an old well on the property but I think it does not work. There are pipes going to creek. Does this pump mean the water is coming from a creek?

It looks to me like an in-line cartridge type water filter

That's a filter.. With an extra filter on top of it.
Unscrew the blue thing. Filter is inside.

i think that is a "big blue" filter as seen here
http://www.bigbrandwater.com/bigbluesystems.html

you can buy many types of filter that fit inside. a spare simple paper filter for sediment seems to resting on top of it. but you can also buy slightly more expensive filters with other powers - such as a charcoal filter to eliminate sulfur (rotten egg) smell, other filters for iron (rust stains on white [porcelain) , etc.

I use one just like this to filter lake water for use in kitchen and bathroom, all uses except for drinking (even washing dishes). I use a 1 micron rope filter vs. the paper filters and get much better service and longevity (filter costs maybe $16 USD I think). Paper filters are cheaper but they don't last as long. Ultimately if you have your water professionally tested they will recommend what type of filter would be best for you.

Best guess from the picture is to follow the steel pipe to get at the pump. Just a guess.

My guess is "yes"

The pipe going to the creek is pvc so I guess that means the well is dead because the well is hundred years old. I dont really understand why a 200 ft deep well can die. I might pump filtered water down the well to restore it.

It could just mean the pump in the well quit working, not neccesairly that the well died.

May be a casing showing above ground somewhere, about a 6" or 8" pipe with a cap/cover, and perhaps a conduit with the wire in it going up into the cap. If it's 100 years old tho, no telling how it's covered, or how it had a pump in it.

Is the pipe from the creek all downhill? It may be set up as a gravity feed.
