Purchased Brunton 15w solar panel with controller and 2 battery monitor guage from Cabelas; 400w inverter from Wmart; used battery from truck. assembly was quick and works well for for lights and radio.
Will add a 2nd panel for faster recharge and 2nd battery. Everything came to less than 300$

Cool!

Can the panels be installed in the woods - i.e., will they collect energy if in partial or full shade? Or do they have to be in direct sunlight?

I depends on your power consumption.
IMHO, it will take 2-3 times longer to recharge the battery in shade than in full sunlight. Works for us anyway.

My solar panes are in the (partial) shade in the woods (I didn't have other choice...), and it's OK for us when we come to the cabin over the weekend.

Hello friends,

I figured I could handle a simple, inexpensive (cheap) solar PV system for my camper. I'd heard of solar panels. I support renewable energy. I felt I could do it. And, no way was I going to miss out on music, lights, and definitely not my portable computer, furnace fan, or other creature comforts. I wanted it all. I just needed a small solar set up to be happy. It's just a trailer; a weekend retreat (sometimes longer) where I take work occasionally.

Every thing here is good for a small setup untill you said { furnace fan } now you will need a much larger system. At least a 60 watt panel and two or three batteries!!!
