Hi everyone! I'm interested in building a small cabin on some family land, but things could happen and someday it might not be mine and I might need to move it. I was thinking of building it in a way that it could be movable. Has anyone done anything like that before and does anyone have any suggestions?

A number of the board members have built their cabins in sections, and hauled them to the site for assembly. If you can get a trailer or a tow truck to the build site, you can even build the whole thing at home and haul it to the property

By movable you mean "possible to move" or built on wheels? I assume you mean "possible to move". Look into what sizes, width & height especially, you can move over the roads without a permit. Getting a permit to move oversize can be costly. Also do you have the equipment to move it yourself? How much will it cost to move by a mover? Check out those things before spending too much time thinking about it.

I plan to build the cabin on site, but since I don't technically "own" the land I was wondering if it would be feasible to just move it myself should the need arise? I guess it would be possible to build it in a certain way that it could be dissassembled and trucked out on a trailer...

In your situation, I would consider a pre made shed/cabin.. Set on blocks like a house trailer. If you need to move it, there are companies that specialize in moving them.

Personally I think that disassembly to move is a poor option. If you want to be able to move it build it in a manner suited for a building mover. skid timbers or steel beams under the whole thing. Having a building mover do it you would want to have a destination that would not be too far or the costs may get out of hand.

You could try building on a flat bed trailer of sufficient load carrying capacity, then it could be pulled away by a HD pickup. Limited to a width of 96 to 102" in most places, as height limits as well.

I built mine on 3 10"x10"x20' preasure treated skids and then tied them together with 6 steal beams and for corner lift points so the cabin can be lifted and put on a transport trailer also prefabed mine at home so if I chose to split it in half I could transport on my flatdeck trailer but I dont ever see me moving it that way.

You could always fit out some shipping containers. Join 2 40ft containers down the middle, put a simple roof over the top for aesthetics. It would be easy to pickup each container and transport for reasonable cost as far as you might need.

just my 2cents.

I built a portable on 6x10x26' skids. It can be lifted by a crane and set on a standard heavy duty flatbed trailer. I set the skids 8' apart on the outside edges, the width of most trailers I checked on, from guys that haul heavy equipment. I estimated the weight of mine at about 12,000+ lbs, and rounded up to 13,000 for asking about cranes capable of lifting it. I built it 12' wide not counting eaves, and with the standard 3' high flatbed height mine can be moved without getting too fancy as regards power lines. There isn't much for bridges around here. I called the State to ask what height and width needed special permits to move, and used those general ideas for building mine to avoid needing special permits, just oversize placards.

That is very nice. In your area that would be a great business I would think.
