There are hundreds of small towns in the US and Canada that would make a great place to live in retirement age or just a place to go for long weekends. Small towns are layed back and are a great place to be. In most that I know of are really no differant then living in the back counrty. Some of the greatest people I know live in these rural settings. Houses and land I have found is a lot cheaper and costs less to live there then in any big city. I was from a very small town and it is always a pleasure to return there. I feel so at ease no hurrying around when I visit there. It maybe a thought for some. You can buy a home for little or nothing in these great towns.

I agree with you neb. We live in a small town and I wouldn't trade it for any other place. I like the idea of having neighbours around. It's nice when you go shopping in the big town (20 km away) and spend more time chatting with folk you know then shopping.  Small town living is good indeed!!

I always feel I was very lucky to be raised in a small town. It was a great place to grow up. The country side was just out my back door and that is why the great outdoors has always been such a big part of my life. It really was no different then living in a very rural area. Hattie also agree with the people and you know everyone and everyone is there to help because they are community family. I know many people that move to small towns and enjoy the great people that live there. For me it was like living in Mayberry the TV show Andy Griffith show.

My town.. Population 600.. 20 miles to anything. We have a stop sign.. Been here 10 years. I couldn't live in the city. I've been to all of the major cities when I drove a truck for a living, in my 20's and wanted to see things. I saw it. I'll never go back, unless I'm just passing through. at 2am when there is less traffic)

Neb--i agree--i live in the country 5 miles from the nearest town / which has 2 traffic lights....but we have a hardware store, gro /gas stations and dollar general LOL....( country walmart)
i love living in the county , i can see a house from mine and since the leaves are off the trees , i see more yard lights at night. I have a 25 min ride to a walmart or 1 hour for major shopping...
lived in a big city---for 8 years--hated it!!!!

Its a whole lot cheaper to build in a small town verses on undeveloped land, that's for sure. Just having power, water, and sewage available saves thousands. The little town I built my previous cabin in had 31 people. There were no permits, inspections, or restrictions and taxes were only $178/yr. The yards were large; so the houses had plenty of seperation.

And don't forget to mention the subburbs! They're even worse than big city living - at least most cities have some character features, subburbs are just standardized carbon-copy living.
My order of preference:
1. cabin
2. cottage in small town
3. big city
4. subburb

I think back often about living in such a rural setting. We could walk out the door and snare gophers and walk to go goose and duck hunting. We had a pond we went swimming in and had a good time. In the winter we played hockey in the streets and could play all day and may never see a car. We would pull the sled from the house and trap muskrats all day. The house we lived in may not of looked like a cabin but very close in the setting. Man it was a great up bring and learned the outdoor way of living. People lived simple but where happy.
