Is there a good use for all the ashes we remove from our wood-burners? Use in compost toilet? Fertilizer? Dump on driveway?
(We all know to let these ashes cool before use, not to dump hot ashes in the woods or a plastic bucket, etc)

We dump the ash from our burn barrel (Note that this isn't ash from wood burned; but ash from paper, boxes, newspapers, etc.) into low spots on the property and then cover it with leaves. Basically we use it as free fill.

Wood ashes can be used to make lye, which then can be used to make soap. True. Using home made lye presents a problem though, as one does not necessarily know the strength of the lye. Without knowing the strength it is sort of a shot in the dark to get the correct proportion of lye to fats. I believe that is how lye soap got it bad name for being harsh; too much lye in the mix.
Ashes from garbage including cardboard boxes can contain elements that are harmful to the growth of some plants so it is best to be careful with those.

I used the ashed from my woodstove in the outhouse when I had one. It keeps the odor down, and keeps flies from coming around much. I kept it in the outhouse in a small metal trash can with a small hand garden trowel. Just a light dusting after you're done.
