Hi,

I am new here. My family and I are about 2 weeks away of moving our cabin onto 10 acres of land. I don't have much to choose from as far as the 10 acres. Half of it is wooded. Then I have a small plot of a few trees. I was wondering, we are going to need to keep our cabin in the coolest place possible because we wont have electric for an A/C. Where would be the best place to put our cabin? On the east or west side of the trees? The placement of the trees, should the cabin be in front, on the side... where??

Any tips would be very helpful!

For summer heat avoidance I would have trees to the south and the west.

It also helps to size the roof overhang to provide shade on the windows in the summer but to allow the lower winter sun to strike the glass.

Southwesterly is where the sun will be the hottest. Usually 4-5PM in the summer. So consider that. But how cold in the winter? Sun coming through windows heats it up too. How about south western exposure, but big roof overhang over the front. So it blocks the sun when its high in the sky in the summer, but allows it to shine in when its low in the horizon in winter. In that case, you do not want trees blocking the SW side.

I have had large trees to close to the house or up wind of me and have repaired the roof many a time from a tree branch or a tree toppeling over.So I built my cabin in a spot of high ground with no large trees up wind and just small pines to my south and cherry trees to the north. All my larger trees are well away from my cabin.

I picked the spot on my land that made me happy to be sitting there... nice view, high and dry... then I went from there

Good idea Swamp hunter. I looked at the map of my land and I plan on going over there around 4 pm and sit in the southwest corner and see how cool it gets.
