I stumbled onto this mans video while searching tiny houses on youtube and thought it might be useful information for somebody. basically what this guy did was file for inspection and permits for a two story house and a detached two car garage, he then built the garage first , with bathroom , utilities and all that (legal in his area) , got the garage inspected first then wrote them to tell them the project was done at that point.. Im not saying this would work everywhere but its worth checking to see if this "loophole" could work for you too

Nice that it worked for him. Where I live it wouldn't work. The main building, the house, has to be completed before any detached buildings. Add to that a detached garage or outbuilding can not have a kitchen included in it. Bathroom okay; but no cooking facilities. We have a detached garage with a bedroom suite upstairs. The city is okay with that. There's even a small fridge but no stove, no kitchen sink. Zoning says single family only.

Interesting documentary, but what he didn't mention is why the county wouldn't permit a small house. The bank won't lend on a small house, and contractors won't build it, but he used neither of those. The building codes provide a minimum size for an efficiency house which is smaller than what he built. Don't know why he had to 'fool' the county.

the message I like from the video is that you don't have to live in debt paying interest forever. Tired of paying interest to banks.
