I recently (last spring) purchased 80 acres on a lake outside of Parry Sound Ontario. There is no road in to the property so everything has to come in by ATV and trailer along an existing snowmobile trail. I am 'refurbishing' an exisitng log structure that was previously located on the property. I need to bring in some 16' lumber ( a lot of 16' lumber) which is significantly more challenging than the supplies I have brought in to date. I have previously seen contractors moving lumber along the same trail with trailere composed of a hitch and an orphaned set of wheels. The lumber itself, tied to the two components, comprised the body of the 'trailer. this seemed like a very efficient means of transporting the materials, however I have been unable to locate any place to rent, buy or otherwise acquire something similar. Does anyone have any insight inot where I could look to ding some sort of similar set up? I think I could probably get by with just the 'orphan' wheels as my existing ATV trailer could function as the hitch unit.

Lots of Farmers have Old MOBILE home frames w/wheels add some flat boards and Haul Hay bales off a field---I don't think a ATV would begin to haul that--but it was on my Mind,as a idea.
have you ever seen the Rig power companies use to haul Power poles?

Buy another ATV trailer (used?), and modify it to use as your orphan axle.

Sparky, I have seen those rigs used to haul power poles. Same set up - just bigger.

Any old axel from something would work, find a junk lawnmower and remove the rear axel and ratchet strap down lumber to it, and rig a strap to the atv, dont even need a hitch! Otherwise if you want something that is not such a rig, find a local welder fabricator and have them build you something. Might cost 500 bucks but would likely never wear out.

A boat trailer with a 2 x 10 cross member attached close to the front of the trailer, worked well for us.

Use one of these with a coupler attached at the end instead of sliding into a receiver, that will give you a pivot point and articulation. A simple axle on the other end for support.
With a couple layers of long material strapped to the hauler and axle, you then have a trailer for smaller materials on top.

I have an old 8N ford tractor with a scrapper blade on it,I just shoved a dozen boards or so up into the supports and haulled them in one load at a time.It was slow going but it did the job.That little tractor would go through anything.Pluss I only had to go 200 feet.
