Hey everyone, I came across this site and was blown away by all the awesome cabins and had a blast looking at everyones pictures. So now that I have started construction, I thought I would contribute some pictures of my own. My dad and I started work a few weeks ago, the cabin is located in the eastern oregon mountains and is situated on a nice creek. The dimensions are 16x16. we are planning on a 6/12 pitch roof. There is no road into the cabin site so we have been hiking the materials in, and have using a wheel barrow when ever possible. Its not a massive hike, maybe 100 yards or so, but for two people the trips add up! It's been a blast so far, and thanks to my dads knowledge it has been coming along smoothly. The cabin will serve as a get away from work until i can retire out of the military in 13 short years and then depending on my situation, I may live there. I am planning on setting up a simple solar and propane system, but my main concern right now is weather proofing before winter hits. from there, I can add on little projects here and there when I can get away from work. There is a loft over half the area and I will soon be framing in a 8x8 room in the back corner that may one day house a composting toilet and on demand water heater. The front half will be vaulted ceilings and we have framed in a sliding glass door that will provide nice views of the creek and some day open out onto a nice patio. anyways here are some photos and if you have any questions or anything let me know! thanks for everyones pictures and posts, they were a real inspiration for doing it myself.

Very nice,Jakeaba.I have a friend that grew up in your area.She is now retired and goes to Oregon during the winter months,back here in western NY in the summers.She say's that's the most beautiful state of all.

Its on the foothills of the mountains so its not as cold as the higher elevations. The area is very rocky so digging deep would have been a major pain and from what I read the frost line isnt bad. However, just incase there is more than I had expected I used the pier blocks with the adjustable posts to account for any fluctuation in these first few years. Does anyone have any input as far as shingles vs metal roofing? thats going to be the next step once the rafters and sheathing go up.......Jacob

We like metal roofing. It sheds the snow easily, lasts almost forever, looks nice, doesn't grow moss, and is cheaper.

What did you use for the loft floor joists? If they're a tad "springy" run a double row of blocking between them all and you'll eliminate it. Great looking place. Does that creek ever "blow out"?

I used 2x8x16s for the loft joists and will be framing in a room on the underside in one of the corners that will serve as support. Its very sturdy right now and no spring, but it will be nice having a break in the middle. I got it all weather proof for the winter and have been making trips up stacking wood for a wood fireplace i will be installing come spring time. The creek is in a bit of a flood plain, but oddly enough the highest point of the property was close to the creek, and most of the water comes in on the other side of the property where it is low lying and a different small creek emerges when the spring run off starts. the metal roofing was a task! especially when it had to be done in the rain. my dad accidently kicked the ladder over and i had to rambo rapell off the roof. we made sure to have two set up after that. spent my first night up there with the dog and it was awesome. super cold. does anyone have any reccomendations for a somewhat standard wiring setup? i want to insulate it but figure now would be the time to run a few outlets and fixtures in the event i end up getting some sort of power in the future. enjoy the pictures and i appreciate the nice responses. happy holidays. let me know if i can answer anyones questions. jacob

My best advice is to put in twice as many outlets as you think you will need. In my 14x20, I put 4 on each long wall, and 3 on one of the shorter ones, 2 on the other, one each side of the sliding glass door.

Yup, from a girl's point of view, you can't have too many outlets! Easier to put them in now. Think coffee pot, microwave or toaster oven, electric blanket, bedside lamp, maybe a radio, dvd player, cell phone or laptop charger, power tools . . . stuff starts adding up.

Finished the cabin enough to hang out in comfortably this last summer. Just in time to get stationed on the east coast 3000 miles from it  haha i moved all my furniture into it before making the move and it is quite comfy.....hope you enjoy the photos! Also, I now live in the massive sprawl of NYC, if anyone has any experience of ways they enjoy a piece of nature in a city I'd be interested in hearing it! I was thinking of growing some herbs or something in my apt, but was curious if anyone had any ideas........thanks!

Jakeaba, yer cabin rocks!! NYC sounds like a bad trade. I would go with metal roof, hands down.

I'm not on forum much and have just found your build. I love it.
As a Tennessee girl (55yo LOL), I had an opportunity to visit your state for the first time. TN VOLS vs. DUCKS. I must say: this is the only other state I could see myself living! I would move today. The state is amazing. We talk about southern hospitality! Please, we could learn from all the folks we met while there. I have never met a nicer group of folks: "are you having a good time?" "how is everyone treating you?" "we're happy you're here".
