We're heading home from the first phase of our build, with only our twelve posts in the ground. They're foundation grade PT 6x6s. We bought plastic bags (heavy duty ones from Lowes) and thought we'd put two over the end of each post and tape them tight with duct tape to keep the elements out. We'll be gone for at least a month, so I don't want moisture getting in the ends before we can put the floor over them. Is this a good idea, or should we just leave them uncovered?

One month wet, then the rest of their life dry,,,, the upper ends will far outlast the lower ends,,,,, don't worry about it.

If the ends are exposed to moisture and it freezes nothing good can come of it -- if you already have the materials cover it up in case winter settles in before you get back...

Fence posts are exposed to the weather all the time. Can't remember the last time I saw any wrapped in plastic bags. I have several PT wood posts used as fence posts both here at home and in the mountains where we get serios snow at times and freezing temperatures through the winter. Never have had any issues with a post splitting or whatever is supposed to be the concern. Some of those posts are something like 20 years old.
Oh hold on, there has been a problem with one post. I didn't get it deep enough because of a large rock. It has frost heaved... only noticable because it has the latch for the gate and it needs adhustment from time to time.

I'll chime in....don't worry about it. I have had PT posts in the ground for well over 15 yrs...all good
