Hello
Been watching this site for many years, I have 40 acres in Northwest Arkansas and after months of cleaning up after last Jan. Ice storm I am ready to put something out there as far as a cabin. Wanted to get everyones thoughts on this cabin, the price is better than what I can build it for I think, at least I can get it in the dry and work on my own pace at finishing it out. I can see a few things I would want done I think a decking on the roof before the metal is put on, easier to insulate, Any and all opinions are more than welcomed, first time builder here...

I had a 16x20 cabin built last year. Finished on the exterior only. If I had to do it again I would use tounge and groove plywood on the floor. I had the plywood lift at some of the corners. It seemed due to the humidity and hot/cold cycles the cabin goes through. I would plywood the roof before the metal roof is installed. With just the wood strips I may have a condesation problem. I just finished insulating so I am not sure how it will be. Good luck with the cabin. We sure are enjoying ours.

I have a few changes I am going to have them do before they build, some larger windows in the front and I think I am going with 12' walls to give more head room in the loft.

More head room in the loft is good. I am 6' and my loft is 5 1/2'. It works good for sleeping but it would be nice if it was higher. I never thought of it when they built it. Good luck on the cabin. I hope to see some pictures.

Insulation. Either for cold or heat. The more insulation the better.
2"x6" framing is just a little more but offers the chance for R19.
It may also sound king of weird, but I like to sit and visualize how I intend to function in each room. Take you time a nd think your way through each detail, sometime rethink. I also like to solicti other peoples ideas such as you are doing.
I have been building my cabin for almost 10 years. It has been a blast............my latest project is an indoor bathroom and shower.

Hi, What is the roof material? Looks like metal or plastic sheeting? Either way it looks like it would be really loud during heavy rain. Kind of like being in a caravan, where it can be impossible to sleep during heavy rain, due to the insane noise!

I would avoid the earth/wood contact on the piers.
The roof framing could probably use some collar ties.

Hate to resurrect an old thread but the last post by lawn jockey brings up a question I've had floating around in my head for my project.
My project is a 14'x24' cabin with a 12 pitch roof and a loft spanning about a third of the length of the cabin. I would like to have as much open ceiling as possible in the part of the cabin that doesn't have the loft overhead. How high up can the collar ties be before they're not effective? In other words can I have the ties about 2 feet or less from the ridge?

Collar ties are supposed to be high up. They keep the top of the roof together under high winds. You're probably talking about rafter ties, which keep the walls from spreading. They normally go on the bottom third of the rafters.
