What happened to childrens programming? I Understand it has to be entertaining and a little flashy to keep the interest of a child but it seems any intellectual message or any moral message has been lost.

I was a child of the 80s. I know it was for from perfect but even the more "violent" tv shows such as GI Joe and Transformers (my bread and butter as a youth) offered something. GI Joe finished every episode with a moral to the story, the very phrase "know is half the battle" examplified the point.

Every sunday after dinner I would sit with my dad and watch an episode of wind in the willows (the old claymation).

Or in the mornings before school after the news (Dad liked to the news) I would eat cereal and watch "once upon a time... life" which is an amazingly informative serious on how the body works in a simplified version for kids.
I remember Saturday morning was mostly entertainment with cartoon express and shows like astro boy and the real ghost busters, robotech, and alvin and the chipmonks. How bout the littles? I didn't really watch the more "female targetted shows" but I remember rainbow bright and my little pony, I'm sure they had something more to say than sponge bob square pants.
what about teddy ruxpin and care bears?

I think a lot of these shows tried to show a real moral message, about caring and friendship and some of the shows were educational teaching you things.

I remember holidays with the claymation the little drummer boy, and the old frosty the snow man, and even the Grinch. Yogi bears christmas and all the charlie browns.

Now I know I'm an adult and a lot of cartoons have lost there luster in many ways (although I just finished watching the old disney fox and the hound with my son and found it quite enjoyable) but the trash on tv now seems... it seems to be lacking. It's almost like sparkly objects that are just there for kids to stare at. I find it troubling.

I mean even Ninja turtles were often fighting for the little guy, trying to do good in the world and not just bounce around the screen.

I know there are educational shows out there like Sesame street and Dora the explorer and all that. But I find they are geared to a younger audience and the msg they are trying to teach is just an intellectual one. Though I highly value the fact that they are trying to help you help your child to read, count, increase vocabularly and all those good things, I'm not so sure they do much for older kids and there moral developement.
I can't see a 10 yr old watching Dora the explorer and getting much out of it.

I feel like its almost that there is an assumption that children today have a shorter attention span (perhaps they do I'm not sure) As a result of this perceived lack of attention span there seems to be more slap stick and "stupid" novelty humor. It's like they feeling that theres no time to introduce a moral, or try to teach anything because they have to get to the next gag joke.

I know there were these shows that supported gag joke humor (look at bugs bunny, or road runner) but these were often shorts.
Even tweetie bird had a simple message to send. Don't pick on the little guy, because theres always someone bigger than you. And I'm sure that message is lost on 99.9% of the youth watching (because always just thought dogs chase cats, cats eat birds, birds fly away)
But the message was there to some degree. Dogs chase birds too but in the Tweetie show the dog always helped tweetie.

How about that as a statement. When I was child I watched shows that were entertaining and not for the educational or moral lessons they provided. This is 100% of kids, but the best shows offered these things with the humor and entertainment. I don't want it crammed down my kids throat, I don't want the whole show to be one giant "be honest" spammed at him. I also don't want it to be wacky screaming noises and pies in the face for 22mins and at the end you go "what the hell was that about? did anything actually happen? who are the characters and why do I care? was there an obsticle to over come? was there anything of value shared or learned?"

I know I know that so many people here are going to claim the nostalgia bug. But take a look at whats out there? Take a look at kids these days, at parenting. Lack of morals, respect, self respect, self worth, childhood obesity, lack of imagination, lack of education. You can't tell me that todays programming for kids doesn't have an influence (NO I"M NOT CLAIMING ITS THE ONLY INFLUENCE, JUST THAT IT HAS AN INFLUENCE).

Have you seen some of the old Tom and Jerry cartoons? Have you notice they are edited? What is the world coming to. Can't even watch a cartoon mouse and cat have some slapstick.

I suppose I should digress with this. I want the best for my children as my parents wanted for me. I think saturday mornings should have cartoons, I think a story read to them before bed is a wonderful joy to share, and I think playing outside with your children is something that not enough people do. As for when they are in front of the tv for shows or video games (hey I gew up with atari and nintendo why shouldn't they be allowed so of it) I would like the things that they watch and play to offer a little more than some sponge walking about in his underwear picking his nose for 22 mins.

Liberals dumbing down. I wonder when Yukon Cornelius will no longer be packing the Colt .45 with ivory grips on Rudolph the red nosed reindeer? And of course, pulling the teeth out of that poor defenseless endangered species, the Yetti.

Cartoons has been sissified or liberalized. Captain planet? Come on, making the corps look like big mean polluters out to kill all their customers.

Does Yosemite Sam still carry his sidearm, how about Elmer Fudd and his shotgun? If you was shot in a cartoon, you just had a blackened face for only about 3 frames and it was all good after that.

We are going to have a bunch of weenies so afraid of getting their feeling hurt in a dumbed down mediocre society where everyone is a winner (equal) no one loses, you are special. You can tell everyone how special you are on twitter, my space, facebook. And of course, the huge birthday parties, all the fixins, clown and sideshow and all. All just to celebrate the very day the "I'm so special kid" blessed everyone around him by being borned. And as an adult, he can still take his birthday off at work. That is, if he signs off the X Box network long enough to find a job.

When I was a kid, the streets was filled with kids playing, riding bike, empty lot playing softball, tree-forts, at the lake swimming or playing in the water. We wouldn't be home till after dark. Mom had to call us in for dinner and we didn't even want to come in and eat. We'd rather skip dinner to get another 30 minutes of outside playing in.

Now, look at the streets in your neighborhood during the summer break. No one out there. Parks set empty. Kids hidden in their rooms, drapes pulled as to remove the glare of the TV so as to not to interfere with "SOCOM, Medal of Honor IV" etc.

Great minds think alike. Now everyone knows my political position.

Reddly, do what I do, de-program your kid when they come home from school. Now I'm de-programming the grandkids too.

Isn't there another part of this forum for this type of commenting? Whatever happened to this site being about cabins and cabin building. Everytime I come on here now someone is complaining about guns, woodstoves, cartoons, employment, government etc. This entire country has become a nation of whiners and paranoia - and it doesn't matter what political party you belong to either - they're both doing the same thing.
I'm all with you on the way this world is turning, but please keep this site about cabins and cabin building.
Sorry for the rant.

You can find old (and only sometimes more appropriate) children's shows online. This morning we watched a full episode of "The Muppets" with John Cleese on Youtube and other days the kids watch old Mickey Mouse cartoons online. For Christmas my brother bought the kids a couple of DVDs with hundreds of old (and I mean old) cartoons, so they're currently enraptured by Popeye, old Superman cartoons, and Mighty Mouse, all of the vintage that my 76 year old father could have watched them as a kid.

I don't know if my kids fully understand that these shows aren't current, since we don't have cable and they have nothing to compare them to. They keep their attention (turn them into zombies) as effectively as any modern fare.

If you don't like the children's cartoons on t.v. these days then don't let your kids watch them and find alternatives. There's plenty out there.

Off topic:
Errr Anonymous What "entire COUNTRY" are you talking about???? If I am not mistaken the forum was originated by a CDN. There are people from many countries all over the world. Many posters seem to forget that there is more than one country in the world...

On topic: It seems I am older than most....Give me Bugs Bunny and crew. And of course the Road Runner.. I still enjoy those shows. Good wholesome violence.

Pepe' la Pew (likely spelled this wrong)

The lady wife has encountered so many Pepe's and Pepe families at the out house we have named the trail that starts at our outhouse Pepe' trail.

Forgot to mention the musical scores from Bugs Bunny and the Loonies Tunes. Any appreciation of good classical music I have, the seeds were planted then. Certain music brings back images of Bugs the conductor or one of the many chase sequences.

Too bad all learning was not so enjoyable.

Wow, you guys are great. So many shows I had forgotten about, good quality shows that seem to reinforce education and the more positive moral values that seem to lack today. I had forgotten a lot of these shows especially from my younger years.

Oh and a big thankyou Toyota and MtnDon, I thought I had done something wrong and not understood the rules of posting in the off topic forum.

As for where my mind was at when I wrote my little ranty, question. I was having a rough day at work in the city and was thinking about being out at my parents cabin. Having my Grandfather bbqing and everyone enjoying the calm quiet. Having neighbors come by and sharing a drink and a meal. People being friendly and polite. Kids being polite and growing up right. I thought about how I wanted my son to grow up, how my dad raised me, the things that I would try to do with him. My life growing up wasnt deprived of TV or even video games. But there were limits and there were things that I wasn't allowed to watch (though I was never told specifically not to watch them I just knew that I should so I didn't) I was sitting with my nephews, 3 and 5. They are bombarded 24-7 with cartoon network. Some shows I knew and others I hadn't seen before.

After a while I was rather put off at the inane nose picking and stupidity of some of the shows so I began to wonder about the shows of my youth. So in my ultra (coughcough) computer savey manner I searched out some of the cartoons and shows I watched as a child. Yes they were silly looking back at them as an adult. But past all the goofy entertainment there was usually some value to the show of some sort. I can't say that every episode had a life changing lesson to be learned, or taught me something. But I feel that there was some substance that might rub off.

Thinking about why I value my dads cabin, why I want a get away for my family. why the out doors are important and family activities. I suppose the cabin in the woods is more about a life style for me and my family than a little weekend vacation. I don't like what I see in the world. It's an unfriendly place that rushes by running people over and values what I think are the wrong things. I see a small cabin as a way to help keep my children, my nephews, my family in general together and maybe make each one of them a little better than they would be if they just living in the moral decay that is going on around us.

I know that a lot of people out here go to the small cabin for many reasons, but I know that a fair amount of those reasons seem to come back to this similar trend. I didn't pick this forum just to spew some random thoughts. I spoke my mind here because I think that a lof ot people understand this and the larger issues.

I suppose the small cabin is more than a structure in the woods. It feels more like a philosophy about life. If that makes any sense at all.

I think we are all stressed out. . . economy. . . stress of little kids getting killed in school . . . more stress from the knee jerk reaction to little kids getting killed in school . . . I think we all just want to go hide out at the cabin . . . hence why we are on this forum!

And Looney Tunes really are the best aren't they? Like what was said above, the music was good too. They were well written for adults as well.

Great thread.

What a wonderful distraction.

I mostly just loved Porky pig, Sylvester, and Daffy duck.
Matter of fact, I had the front office play Porky pig's version of Blue Christmas over the intercom at the office this year.

Yes, I'm a child.....an old fat grey child.

AND I LOVE IT!
