Using pine rough cut board on board for exterior of cabin. Not sure what stain or the process to use. Some say sand, wipe with damp cloth, let dry then apply sealant. Repeat first process and them apply stain. Any advise or products to use?

i simply stained my cabin with a sealer stain i bought at ace hardware. i didn't sand the cabin but then again i didn't use rough cut lumber. i applied one coat and applied the second coat 2 years later. i have 4 winters on it and show no signs of water intrusion.

i used a 15-year Behr solid stain on my pine siding that ranked really high on Consumer reports. Here's a link to it. it ranked higher than its 20 or 25 year "premium" stain.

I also used some product from Behr to wash the wood prior to staining as recommended in the directions. I just used a scrub brush.
I put one coat one here are my place, then hauled it up to the cabin, where I installed the siding and then put a second coat on. This was all done this past summer, but so far so good. touch base with me in 14.5 years and I'll tell you if it lives up to the 15 yr claim.

I have the same question. We put rough cut pine chink siding on our shed and need to stain it. We want to use a dark stain, to go with the locust posts and poplar trim. Any ideas or suggestions?
