What are people here using to keep bears at bay? I am thinking shutters and possibly some bearboards but putting an electric fence on standoff posts right on the walls could work well too. The bearboards make me nervous with my little kids running around.

Our cabin is about 120 miles north of Anchorage. Stout wood shutters, plywood bolted across the door, and a sheet of tin on the stairs (which actually does more to keep winter snow off the steps than summer bears off the steps).
Electric fences are very effective, plus we make sure the burn barrel has only ashes, no food rewards. Still, they knock it over just for fun I think.
Last line of defense: an 870 w/slugs.

I'm no expert, but if you don't like the bearboards, how about some type of scent..I know dogs hate pepper?

Any scent, no matter what would probably just attract a bear. I like the idea of the electric fence because not only will it keep the bear out (hopefully) but it will also help with adverse conditioning so the bears learn to stay away from the site.

we don't see too many here, a few miles away in higher elevations they are a problem (common black bears) but are smaller and timid thanyours so really they only go after trash cans and food left out by campers. they know enough to fear people since people eat these bears (almost wiped out 100 years ago in the north east, only the timid ones who hid away in the remote places and kept away from people survived the lack of hunting regulations, their descendants inherited the coward traits when thy repopulated)

If s bear smells anything, it arouses its curiosity and thus anything with an odor is an attractant.

I guess I was thinking along the lines of Motion Activated Bear Pepper spray something that you can turn off when the children are around.
Or again no expert a predator scent (adversary) That could be placed on the outskirts of the property line, so they be less incline to proceed further.
What about natural barriers? Thorny hedgerows,Rocks, thick overgrown vines.
I was just thinking outside the box since he was looking for Ideas ..Electric will work sure and will recondition bear behavior.
But it's not a nice way for a little kid to learn about electricity and could sour him on future outdoor actives.

I think I would prefer my kids get a zap over stepping on a bear board....they will cry either way but the boards could ruin an entire trip.

My grandpa had an electric fence for his cattle. My cousin still spends time outside even though he peed on it. Brings back great memories!
