Brand new to the site, today! We are finally building a levee on my farm and creating a spot for duck hunting. In doing so I would really like a place to stay because the drives about an hour or so from home. There is an old barn on our property that has a loft that I would like to build out a room on for a place to sleep, cook, hang out with the other guys/family in our down time. I'm mainly just wanting any tips, pointers, suggestions or whatever on how to make this thing work, or if it's a bad idea, or whatever you may have. I wanted to consult some cabin veterans before I spend to much time researching and looking into it. Money is definitely in question, I won't say we have an exact budget but if it'd be cheaper building something then that's the route we'd need to go. Let me know your thoughts and any initial questions you might have. Thanks all, looking forward to it.

Goal: have a sleeping area to sleep 6-8, kitchenette, enough room for sitting area. There is no electric currently on site. There is an old well with a hand pump but doesn't seem to work at this time.

I did this, only it was a corn crib that dated to pre-depression days. It was a lot of work...nothing was plumb, level, or square, and all of the framing was old growth heart pine that was so hard it required drilling a pilot hole for nails. Did it all with hand tools.

I wouldn't take for the experience, but wouldn't do it again, either.

Sounds like a fun project.Depends on what size and shape your barn is in.If you could shoot us some pictures of it we could see what you got to work with?
