So I find out I have a 900 ft well on the property I bought and its been running for at least the last 20yrs. (per the farmer who lives close). So..... it drains down the property following the path of the land until it reaches the run off ditch at the side of the road. Wondering it there is a way to dig and create a pond and try to contain or at least keep some of the water on property other than plugging the well. There is some valves and so on but any sort of shut off is long gone and no idea how to fix or repair. A pond would be kick butt...but I fear nothing is that easy. My brother has some heavy machinery that could easily clear a "pond" area. Any thoughts, suggestions or possible recommendations? Just thinking outside the box here, but hey, isn't that what life is worth living for!

We built our pond in 78 it is 50 x 80 and about 5 ft. deep . It took a D5 dozer 8 hr. to dig . It has no water source except rain, it has only gone dry once in 35 years.
It has been at the center of our family life ever since . it attracks all sorts of wild life .
Took this pic tonight ,the iris are in full bloom .you will never regret digging a pond .

Go for it! Your brother wants to put his heavy equipment to work, right? Lol. Don't all men? You won't regret it. We dug ours last year because we needed drainage around our cabin. It is presently overflowing from all the rain we've had and we are in the process of digging an overflow ditch, but then it should be good It has been good for the wildlife and peaceful to look at. I love it!
One caution for you. See if you need permits and what the penalty would be if you don't get one.  That way you'll know and can decide whether you want to proceed.

Hey Just. Iris will grow that close to the water and not rot? That would be great...I have a bunch at home that could stand to be dug up and separated. Your pond looks nice and full this year

Ahh TB..that is a certain kind of iris called Iris psuedocorus, it is a water loving plant easily found here in Wisconsin! Comes in yellow and a faded purple...both are native!

I would do it. We built ours in 2005 and love it. Like everyone says it draws a lot of wildlife. We stocked it but have not fished it much but hope to do that more this year. It is also a great place to take a swim to cool off after working on a hot summers day.

Ponds are a joy, but building one is not always as simple as digging a hole. I won't go into details here, because there is plenty of information elsewhere on the net. Suffice it to say, some engineering is involved, all sites are not suitable, and it is deserving of the same thoughtful consideration that you would give to siting and building a cabin.
Most iris, btw, will tolerate having their feet wet. For those in southern latitudes, have a look at Louisiana Iris. Spectacular!

One more thought: islands are cool. Who doesn't love an island? Birds like to nest there, because they afford protection from some predators.
Pretty easy/cheap to create one during the construction phase.

Dozer all set for next weekend! Case of beer and a campfire is all it took! Pixs will be added when we get it going. So I'll be researching this week to see what we need to do. Hopefully weekend dig will keep those pesky inspectors away. Cant see it from the road and going to try to get the machine in late Friday night under cover of darkness.
