My wife wants to get a dog because our cabin is quite remote and she will spend a week at a time there by herself. We are not dog people but I don't think an attack cat will have the same deterrent effect against coyotes and mountain lions.

Well my brother had one of those but they are pretty high maintenance and it drove the neighbor dogs crazy. It wasn't afraid of them and that confused them.
We had a bobcat for a pet in high school. He was just a big kitten though. He loved everybody and really loved to wrestle with the dogs.

Years ago my son gave me a jungle cat. At 43 pounds it was a bit much. I could never bond with it even though most cats like me. Every time I tried to get close to it it would get scared. Evert time it got scared it would sh!t on the floor or where ever it was. I finally built a special outdoor kennel for it and I would go in and try to bond with it. Things didn't improve. My son (he has several exotic cats) would come over and sit in the kennel and the cat would sit on his lap like a house cat. Finally I sent the cat back to him. He would let it wander around San Francisco and everything was fine. A couple of years later it was hit by a car and killed. That must have been one surprised driver.
As to pets at the cabin I always take my Brittany and I usually take at least one of the kids' dogs too. They love it. I worry about snakes, the Brittany does well with the but I haven't seen who the kids' dogs do/

I'm an absolute dog lover. However our last dog (Schotzy), a Tibetan Terrier (more like terror) darn near cured me.
Lovable? yes.
Loved the snow? oh yeah.
Unfortunately loved (more than anything) to poop, everywhere.
Well, not everywhere, just everywhere inside...my den being the main target.
I think she might have had a generous portion of Doberman Pooper in her pedigree...
Her main preoccupation was bringing things home from the neighbors. Brought a whole pizza home one late afternoon.
Her fetish was filled pampers. I'd see her rushing back from the neighbor's trash can, tightly wrapped loaded pamper in her mouth. Then she'd whip to the back yard, look furtively around, open her prize like a baked potato and dine.
Smart? yeah
Blockhead? Oh yeah
Once we get serious about residing year round at our refuge, I plan on having a lab, of the stealth pedigree.....not a hound, too many containment issues, and certainly not a Tibetan terror.

We have a german shepherd/ border collie cross. Wow, is she smart! You tell her something once and that's it, she's trained. When I'm in the back doing laundry, I tell her to watch the door and let me know if anyone comes - she does! At night she brings us all her toys from her toybox in the bedroom. Before bed, she puts them all away! She's 11 years old now with some pretty bad hip problems. I dread the day we don't have her because we will never find another dog as smart as her. She won't step a toe off the property unless we allow her to - even if a neighbour is holding out a treat for her.
Hubby and I have decided our next dog will probably be from a local lab breeder. Labs have short hair and where we live with all the burrs, short hair is a must. I love beagles, but that isn't realistic with all the animal smells around - it would catch a scent and I'd never see it again.

We have a Border Collie/Lab cross who is with us when go up to the cabin. He is allowed to run free but never goes to far; except at night time when he sticks right by us due to the local coyotes. He has so much fun at the cabin it takes him a couple of days rest to recuperate back at the city house. You can see more of our dog Benji on his Face Book page. URL

Yeah Hattie, we had a beagle. Loved that dog, but yes, too much hound for a pet. He loved to chase deer (just not in my direction).
Not into tying up or penning up pets.
Actually loved that goofy little Tibetan terrier. A veritable love sponge, but she was such a block head.
First time we saw her, we thought she was a black throw rug. Then, after seeing it was a dog, I thought she had just one eye.
Turned out whe was just walking the other way............
Not into cats much. Mouser? I s'pose. But the only protection they seem to be interested in is themselves. Just women in cheap fir coats, as they say. Not generaly the loyalest of species.
I mean, put a dog and cat in the trunk of your car for a few minutes(not at the same time!). Open the trunk..which one is happy to see you?

Keep tabs on your male dog (certain times of the season) if not fixed. Female Coyotes have a way of calling them out to the pack, then things get a bit ugly...

Oldest to youngest...
Jimmy (RIP) was a Jack Russell Terrier didn't live long enough to see the property. He went blind about the time I signed the contract and passed a few days before the deal was done. Now he is permanently residing at the property.
Spunky is a JRT, mixed with some treat-hound and attention-whore. She has been with me since I could cup her in my hands. She's about 15 now and still wants to go exploring in the woods If she was 10 years younger she would have disappeared on her first trip to the property
Dakota is the GFs oldest, maybe 7 now. Black Lab and Border Collie mix. She likes people more than she like running around in the forest and stays close to the trailer
Kaylee is her youngest, she is about 4. English Pointer and Golden Lab mix. Sweet dog but not too smart and she doesn't listen so she has to be tied up or she will be off in the woods. Typical blond
Rojo is the youngest, she's a few months younger than Kaylee. Red Nose Pit Bull and Black Lab mix. Loves to walk the trail with me, she's always out exploring but never goes out of sight... She will get 100 feet or so ahead and look back at us as if to say "Would you guys hurry up!"
Spunky spends most of her time @ the property sleeping, but the other three are always on alert. If there is a noise in the woods, I can look at them to know if it was just a falling acorn or a forest critter.
I'm allergic to cats, but when I have something more permanent than the trailer I will keep one around to deal with the vermin.

Here she is. Just walked into the river and layed down. This was about 2 weeks ago and the water was fairly cold.

We have 2 dogs, both bulldogs. One is a french bulldog named Gizmo. Other is an English bulldog names Gadget. Gizmo is about 2 1/2 yrs old. Gadget is almost 6 months.
French bulldogs are not supposed to get over 30 lbs, mine is 48lbs. Gadget is almost 50lbs now. Growing like a weed.

Actually, she may have just needed to cool off. Even though fall and possibly a bit nippy out, had she been running?
The belly of the dog contains major blood vessels, by getting these cool, their body temp rapidly declines.
Our last dog for awhile (Schotzy) had an aversion to water, so she'd just pant away.............

Not sure if this post fits in with the thread but "pets is pets"!
We are "owned" by a 12(?) year old cockatiel named Huxley. We got her as a stray when she was found with a flock of sparrows in a farmyard near the city.
She can't talk, mostly just chirps at varying volumes and whistles, but gets her point across and knows a lot more English than we give her credit. We haven't clipped her wings so she flies through the house between favorite perches. She enjoys looking out the window, getting into places she shouldn't, Guinness foam, typing on the computer, dismantling laptops and napping.
She has bonded with me completely over the years. Huxley tolerates my wife with disdain but enjoys sharing morning toast. Thankfully Huxley likes my mother in law so we can go on holidays.
Both of us, being raised on farms, had a multitude of pets from horses to snakes when we were growing up. We find having a bird is quite different and an enriching experience.
