Rockies, I'm just curious, would you be willing to share your plans/ideas for your cabin? By the way your describing it sounds like it will be an extremely well thought out and efficient cabin in as little of a space as possible which is exactly what I'm looking for. While I wouldn't blame you to give all your hard work over to someone it sure would help. I know I've got a long way to go and a lot of researching to do but with the help of some of my hunting buddies I'm hoping to make this a reality sooner than later.

I have two versions of the cabin, which has evolved over time as I realize more and more about what's needed to live in the country. One version is 16x22 with a small bumpout on the west side (392 sq' main floor), the other is 14x20 with the same bumpout (320 sq' main floor). Each one can be added on to in stages, with a choice of a mudroom, pantry/mudroom, or screen porch depending on your budget. The roof is a simple 45 degree gable over a sleeping loft, but it can be raised to whatever height you want depending on desired headroom. Heating/water purification/electrical is located in a small outbuilding. I plan on using metal screw posts for the foundation (who wants to haul bags of concrete and dig post-holes?) and a perimeter beam system for the foundation. SIP floors and roofs would be the simplest and quickest method of building (framing,insulation and vapor barrier all in one sandwich layer) and the exterior walls will be 2x6 standard framing to allow for easy electrical work. The SIPS are more expensive than standard framing, but the time saved by not having to lay out individual joists and rafters, nail down plywood, insulate, leave ventilation spaces, etc is worth it I think). I can post the latest versions of both size cabins in a couple of days.

biggest mistake..well two, actually...three. I have a good south facing lot, on a slope with a view. I wish I had built a cabin with good passive solar design, instead I went with the more typical box; second I wish I had started sooner and used post and frame construction, my project got too big for just me to do; third I would have never told the Dept of Environmental Quality about my cabin, should have dug a well or caught rainwater instead of getting a water meter and fighting them over the sewer system.

I did not think much about storage ,Who forgets closets??and I was too cheap to do a walk out
I could have paid for it with the cost of ice packs and band-aids from
Smashing my head every time I go in the crawlspace
