I am building a 16x24 cabin on a remote island in southeast Alaska. I'm setting up this topic so I can keep track of progress and also to help other people out. The cabin is located on a island that is roughly 10 miles away from the harbor. Once you get to the island you have to climb a 20 foot cliff then hike uphill to a beaver damn then back another 800 feet to the site. Everything was brought out on a 18' lund and carried by someone back to the site. A couple guys and I did most of the work, we had some others help from time to time. Most trips were day trips this summer and fall. I'm itching to go back but the winter water here is rough, I'll be lucky to make it out once a month until spring.

The land I bought had a site already started. We started cutting up the downed trees. This is when I started to get excited.

I set up for a 16x24 floor. I installed yellow cedar pilings 3 1/2 to 4 feet deep. There was a total of 16 pilings

By Mid May my daughter wanted to come out and help. I used yellow cedar on top of the pilings. This saved me a bunch of time and money. I used treated lumber to brace the pilings.

I was going to leave it at just the platform but I couldn't help myself. This is mid to late June. I went with 10' walls.

We get a lot of rain here so I decided to put the roof on early.

Wow! Awesome! Not too many people can say they have a cabin on an island.

I picked the stove up off of craigslist. I was able to break it down into 8 pieces. It was still a pain in the butt hauling it out there. We packed it up two pieces at a time.

I tend to decorate with snowboards. I own over a dozen snowboards. I have them up in my living room so I figured I better bring some to the cabin.

Just curious what island? I've spent a bit of time in SE AK over the past 35 years, and am currently building a cabin in Atlin BC (over the icefield from Juneau). Guess we're kind of neighbors.

I am on Shelter Island. I have a friend with parents in Atlin. Are you on the lake?

I'm near the lake, about 10 miles south of Atlin proper - just past McKee Creek, if you are familiar with the area.

Your location looks great. Hope to meet you sometime!

Greg,

Your superb Atlin cabin is surpassed only by the even more spectacular scenery. The scenery and flora (minus the trees) reminds me of the 2-1/2 years I spent on Adak Island in the Aleutians back in the 70s. I am so envious.

I'm excited for you and will be watching your thread. You're doing what I've always dreamed of doing, but I'm too infirm to try something like that now.

On a side note; you're set up pretty good to survive the 'zombie apocalypse' whether you intended that or not.
