As I just posted in another section, my wife and I are considering purchasing some land in the spring to build an off-grid cabin but as I have read here and what a friend of her family had happen to him, we don't want to leave anything at the cabin that we don't absolutely need to for fear of theft and vandalism.

I'm wondering if anyone has built a trailer specifically to use to bring all important items to and from the cabin each time you visit.

I'm thinking of a 4x8 utility trailer from Harbor Freight that has Propane Tanks, Gas Cans, Generator, "Portable Hot water Heater", Lawn mower, weed wacker, chain saw, etc.

Just back it under an overhang at the cabin, hook up an extension cord and a few water and gas quick disconnects and your good for the weekend.

I have tried searching the forum for this but didn't find anything. If i'm missing it, please respond with the link as my head is swimming with ideas and want to start putting some more solid ideas down on paper.

Thanks,
Mike

Unfortunately I am not aware of a link that addresses your idea. However, since you have not purchased yet, you may want to also research crime rates near the properties that you are considering.

Going this route may also impact property options. I do find the idea interesting, but our building is 300 feet from the parking area down an uneven trail.

no, I think that is a new idea, many members have trailers but the subject has not had it's own thread .

I've read posts on other web sites about cabin owners that had everything including underwear stolen from their cabin. If you are that worried about theft than maybe you should tow a travel trailer up to your land every weekend or vacation than tow it back home and park it in your yard so you can keep an eye on it.

Your property taxes won't go up since there is no building and you can always build a cabin for when you will be there more often and able to watch your cabin.

I don't recall seeing a thread on here about anyone using a utility trailer to bring up a fully equipped cabin. I suppose you can be the first.
So keep us in the loop. We love new projects and lots of photos.

Hi, It does sound like a good idea. I have heard where they would build an all terrain style "power trailer" but mainly pulled by an ATV around the property itself.
The idea was not exactly what you are saying but similar, and
was to have onboard a fold out solar panel array, along with deep cycle batteries, and a AC power inverter, and even a diesel generator. Sometimes depending on the property there is not a close clear view of the sun. long DC powers runs are not practical. Or there could be multiple "camps" on the property that require power or even a vehicle needs a boost.
Good idea, Please keep us posted.

I'd get a cargo container and weld on a large cover making it impossible to cut the lock and you could even weld a protector over the cam lock assembly concealing all the locking mechanism. A grinder and lots of time or a cutting torch would be the only way. You could paint the think cammo to semi conceal it also.

I think this is a great idea, although I used a pick up truck to haul everything up to the cabin.I have known of cabins, out houses even wood piles that have been vandalized and burnt. It just amazes me why there is always a bad apple in every bunch.
