I have a 12x16 gambrel shabin built I have insulated the walls, not all stapled in yet just placed due to putting windows in still. Anyhow things I want to do still.

Wire some electrical to hook up to 2 or 3 batteries and a generator for back up charge when needed.

Heat - decided wood burning stove

Elevated hearth of brick/tile and cement board on 2x4 frame (75% done cant tile due to weather)

Run a short length of pipe for propane for Big Buddy heater backup when the fire isnt needed or as backup for additional heat.

Flooring (having a hard time picking something and most things I cant do because it is -20 w wind chill right now) thinking laminate stone looking or actually ceramic tile that is stone looking.

Knotty pine wall planks

put in 2 more small windows

Change the door from 2 shed doors to 1 more normal door (quick mind change as shabin just finished a month ago!)

Obviously I need to do the electric and piping prior to closing in the walls but a lot of the other stuff is messed up due to the temps not allowing the work to be done (tiling for example). Or the wood stove cant go in til the floor is done, I cant do the floor because every flooring says it should be installed in 60 to 85 degrees which it definitely is not in northern Michigan right now!

Any help in helping a novice set up a ordered battle plan would be appreciated

Thanks,

Just

Interesting, I would have thought windows and doors would be done at the start of that list, before the wiring even...how are you supposed to keep the copper thieves out if you have no doors or windows!?

You might consider , installing wire for AC as well before you close in. Down the road you might want to use it. If you size it properly , you can use it for DC in the meantime. Old243

Weather can mess with the plans to get it done. That's life.

Finish the shell with doors and windows in place first; roof done to keep things dry. (some of the detail work depends on what the exterior will be finished with, whether or not there will be any exterior foam insulation, ....)

Then complete the exterior siding to get the weather resistant / air barrier covered.

For things that go in the walls, up above the ceiling or under the floor, work from the least flexible to the most flexible. Heating / cooling ducts being large and rigid are first. Then waste drain plumbing along with the plumbing vents. Then any gas piping. Then fresh water supply. Last is electrical as you can weave that around all the other stuff.

Wood stove chimney before finishing the ceiling, although it can be done at any point.

If insulation goes in the wall cavities, then do that when all the above is complete. Vapor barrier if appropriate to climate.

Interior ceiling finish, then walls, then floors, then trim.

Ceramic tile over cement fiber backer board makes for a great easy care cabin floor, IMO.

put the wood stove in first. put the chimney in properly. put a sheet of cement board down on the floor. put the wood stove on top of it. connect the chimney pipe. if you need to change a pipe later, or buy a slightly more expensive expandable pipe...

put blankets over the shed doors.

work on everything else while you're warm. it's frikking cold outside.

Try to locate plubing on an iside wall too. If tis all concentrated to an inside wall, use 2X6 on that wall. Much more room for the vent stack and drains. Plub an outside faucet, put it at the lowest point, engineer it to drain all to the hose bib. As for sink traps, get the ones witht he small plug to remove to drain off for winter, or buy RV antifreeze and pout into the sink traps.

I'd wire for AC and DC, run some extra pairs of wires fromt he crawlspace to attic for additions, ie battery bank, solar panels. It gives you flexibility. Plan ahead, be 2 steaps ahead I guess

I'm thinking of a shed convert. I am toying with the idea of leaving the double shed doors somehow and placing French doors on the inside. Just open shed door and there will be my real doors.

I have some friends that did that to there hunting cabin (gambrel type that looks like a red barn). works out for them great.
