crafter =I bet he makes them.....

I made a hickory self bow and a osage I never finished ....
I shoot recurves and longbows/compounds and x bows...
& have a good collection of ole archery stuff/bows/arrows/quivers...etc. going to use a lot of it for decorations in both camps.

Neb--you still bowhunting right??

Thanks. I enjoy all archery, even compound bows. I have a new PSE here as well. I don't build bows for a living but I have built and sold a pile of them over the years.

I have been fortunate to bow hunt all over this country but I still love chasing whitetails on my Ohio farm. That's how I found this site, was looking for ideas for a cabin on my farm since I live in Pennsylvania. Where you at?

Thanks neb, I've been poking around here since July and I really enjoy the forum. That pic was taken in Montana near McLeod. I have friends there as well as friends in Belgrade, Livingston and Lewistown.

Nothing like traditional archery. Really need to pick your hunting trees with the longbow though(quite big with branches around). Good stress reliever too, letting some arrows fly after work.

Belgrade, Livingston and Lewistown have spent time at all three areas. Lewistown is an awesome area and hope to live there someday. I have friends in those towns as well.

I just purchased a 62" dweyer dauntless longbow made by Dave dweyer in holmen wi. Thought I would share for some reason. Great upgrade from my 68" PSE I started with.

Stickbowcrafter, how did you get started making bows? Self bows or laminations? I'm interested in trying as I consider myself an avid woodworker. Any advise?

To keep this to the forum, I'm also making an archery range at my land this summer. I have ideas for a gantry out of utility poles for hanging targets and possibly a swinging target to practice arial. Anybody done this?

Hey Gman,

I figure I live within a mile of your land. Pearl Lake is a stones throw away. I'm also a traditional bowhunter and make my own laminated bows. If you ever do a bow build you can use my hoses, forms, and heatbox to save some startup costs. We will have to get together and shoot sometime!

That sounds pretty cool. It will probably be a winter project if I attempt it. Is your primary residence in the area or something else? Always good to meet ppl close by. I live just under an hour south. Been in waushara hunting for probably the last 13 years. Looking for a better place to find some turkeys this year though.

How many bows have you built?

Greg I started making selfbows about 15 years ago. Dad had traditional bows when I was growing up, mostly Bears, and I loved shooting them in the back yard. So I have always been into traditional bows as well as Native American history. Through an archery web site, I got involved in an auction to benefit a sick child and there was a selfbow building kit in the auction. I won that auction and have been building bows ever since.

Must have books:

Probably one of the best memories throughout my bow building adventures...stalking a free range bison on a South Dakota prairie with a longbow I built myself. Not sure that one will ever be topped. Not too many modern humans have achieved that feat.

Very cool. Thanks for all the info. I think I'll work with my new bow for quite some time before trying to build. Building just sounds like a fun thing to do. My father in law got me into traditional about 2 years ago and I've been hooked ever since.

Gman-

This is our permanent residence. We have 6 acres and built our "cabin" in the woods 4 years ago. It is 26'x40' so is stretching calling it a cabin.
We milled the pines that we took out to build and had it all milled to finish the inside of the house. We kept the outside more maintenance free.

I'm sure you have explored all the DNR land in the area...sometimes it can be good. I have been seeing a good amount of turkeys.

Hunting with a bow that you made with your own two hands is satisfying....the more the challenge the more the reward!

Brian- You the man!

I've hunted land off S, Chicago ave, and Q. I've seen one turkey off Chicago and that's it. I have a million roosting in my trees but it's bow only and I'm the only one in my three man hunting party that will use bow. I'm in a little chunk north of red granite. Kind of a rural subdivision. Never ment to be for hunting. Just a cabin someday.

Most of my deer hunting for gun is by Hancock or germainia. For bow I go up by nekoosa.
