Hey all

We made it up to the cottage last weekend, the ice is finally out! I built a Zip line for my son and made a video. Its a lot of fun for not a lot of money.

Thanks Kudzu.
Just we may make it a bit steeper and add a break later on, for now i left slack to allow them to run to a stop well before the tree. I think your right we do shop at the same store.

That not only looks like tons of fun, but the video itself is excellent, very well made. Really enjoyed watching it; I thought I was watching a TV program!
Nice work on both!!!

Nice video. This is a project I have been waiting to do as well.

Can you shed some insight on these two items:
Petzl Tandem Speed (Transport Pulley)
Campbell 1/4" x 250' Galvanized Cable 7000827 Aircraft Cable

from amazon.

I see you built your trolley, but would the above run smoother/faster?

Nice job of detailing the build on video. I built one last year and I tried garage door pulleys. I used one and it spread apart. Then I build a trolley with two and it worked great.
A funny thing happened to my 13 year old grandson this late winter. He had to try it out, it's about 150' long and when he got to the other end, he couldn't walk though the snow to get back.
I think there should be threads about zip lines from a year or more ago.

Thanks for the comments

Thecabincalls, I'm sure that pulley would run faster but found that running slower was preferable. Stopping at the end is the dangerous part! My setup is quite smooth and I can adjust the speed by lowering the connection on the end tree. It doesn't take much to really affect the speed. You can build a breaking system with bungee cord, but I prefer having a run out area.
Good luck with your zip line.

I just kept raising the line on the lower end to safely stop the kids, then they drift back to the lower place to climb down. I have a short ladder so heavier kids can climb up a little and the lite ones can ride on the bottom rungs. The ball bearing pulleys are fast and work great. I do spray them with oil a couple times a year.

Ontario Lakeside - I forgot to ask. How do you get the pulley back up the hill?

Cabincalls. You might be able to see in the video, we drag a light weight yellow rope as the rider goes down. then just pull the carriage back up. works really well

Okay. I didn't see it and wondered if it could become tangled up with rider or object below.

Do you leave the carriage/trolley on when you are not at the cabin? I think we'd have to have a way to remove it while we weren't around.

I just coil the rope behind the rider on the ground and allow it to nu-spool as they go. no issues so far. I pull the two pins on the pulleys and bring the trolly inside when we are not using it. I figure its better to keep it dry.

OL, a bit off topic. I also viewed your "time table" video. Sweet. And, as others have stated, both videos very well done. I wish I were as good at it.
