Arson at my neighbour's place a short walk from my cabin. Bored youths probably, police are "investigating" but I'll be shocked if anything comes of it. Owner is devastated. Place is tucked away up a hill in the woods, likely giving the criminals a sense of privacy especially as the cottages are used very infrequently in winte[img=null]null[/img]r, even if another neighbour did happen to come up the road, which was snowed in at the time so these guys came in on foot, quad, or skidoo. Could have been worse as the trees were scorched, but this happened during late March so it was still snowy and wet. Practice fire safety, consider insurance, and cross your fingers that your place doesn't become a target while you're away. I know the rest of us at the lake are on edge. But what can be done. Not much really other than hope whoever did it stays far away now that the deed is done.

that is brutal. What is wrong with people?
One of my fears. Break-ins are bad enough, but that is just insane.

That's terrible.
How sure is the owner that arson was the cause? You say there was definite tracks of some sort coming in and out of the property? I mean, there are so many ways a fire can start.. lightning, electrical malfunction, even a large rodent can tip over a fuel can and cause a spark.
Whatever the case, it's a sad story. If it is in fact arson, I hope the aholes get caught

Saturday evening I watched with fear as the local Volunteer Firemen dealt with a grass fire about a half mile away. They got it under control but man did it look close with my binoculars.
Probably was a stray cigarette from a passing car, but I can't be sure.

It's known to be arson because nobody had been there in several weeks, and the area is totally off the grid so there is no electricity. I mean, I suppose there is a tiny chance it somehow started another way but doubtful. I am still waiting to speak more at length with the owner about what they know. In late fall, their place was vandalized too (broken windows, etc.) Probably the same kids wanted to rekindle their fun and as they had success messing with this secluded place before, took it up a notch. Just speculation for now but I will update with any new information.

I'd put up 2 (one visible, one highly concealed which overlooks both the cabin and the first camera) game cams...
But that's just me.

Could be one of his neighbors couldn't get along with him, didn't like his cabin location, or another reason. Or yeah could've been darn kids too.
It sucks, I know. My brand new truck got the whole side keyed up when it was only a week old. Cost me almost $1000 just because someone didn't like my new truck.
It's no comparison. My truck got scratched. He lost his whole cabin.
But anyone that has been victimized by arson or vandalism can relate and feel his frustration.

Scum bags!  Hope they nail them! I have a Covert MP6 trail cam that points right at the cabin. Won't prevent this but just might help ID anyone up to no good.

I am sorry for your neighbours loss and the affect this can have on someone's peace of mind.
While at camp/cabin last night, it was clear that someone had been walking around (someone other than me) and there were fresh cigarette butts (I don't smoke) around the property in far removed places (back of property near water access, near cabin and pod, etc). Same brand, same smoke pattern. Since all the snow has melted, and the ground is now visible, they were easier to see or spot.
It pissed me off enough that someone was snoopy around and although it bothers me, I can live with it if people are respectful but what is more concerning to me is that aside from our township/county's current fire ban, we also don't have a fire department and if they weren't paying attention they could have caused a fire and destroyed the land, camp, cabins, pod, etc...in other words, my happy place. I am just so sorry for your neighbours loss, not just the cabin but in having a special place in the world and now having the feeling impaired or tainted from this incident - because it wasn't an accident (if it was arson).
Because of our limited local resources, one of the first things I do when people come to camp the first time, is go over safe fire (camp fires, candles, smoking, cooking, etc) use on my property and what is expected of them out of respect for me, my neighbours, themselves, the habitat, etc.

Sad to hear.
Its known that mice have started fires by chewing on strike anywhere matches. Something to keep in mind. Matches should be kept in mouse proof containers if they can get inside.

Good advise and yes that is how some of these fires start. A glass jar will work also that is stored properly.

Go online and check out the nearest town to you- "nowhereville- "topix" or "forums".. In some rural areas you'll see the latest gossip, etc. lowlife news and info. It's not pretty, but there may be some clues as to who was responsible . My worst nightmare, too.
