Hey everyone,
I am new to this site. I am very interested in alternative energy like solar and micro hydro systems. I don't know much about this type of stuff but am very interested due to debt and a million of other reasons. I want to save in the long run. So if I took very detailed pictures of my property (the creek/stream and pond) would anyone be able to tell if a micro or pico hydro power would be possible?

Here's a website by a guy who claims to have worked out all the ins and outs of water wheel construction along with electric generation-

But one thing is that there is a world of difference between building a water wheel and installing a water turbine, or Pelton Wheel. A turbine operates under pressure from a feed pipe, a water wheel operates from water poured onto it from a sluice and not under pressure. That's all I know- just enough to be dangerous.

jf275: To make effective power from a micro hydro you need both head and flow. At least 10 GPM and a 50 ft drop. Preferably more of both. Run of the river (e.g. water wheel) type systems will produce very little power and require massive amounts of water.
Post some pics, but most importantly, see if you can estimate flow rate and how much total vertical drop you have; from that can decide if its feasible.
