My ancient Honda EX1000 has gone bye-bye, and I have a new glossy Champion 73536i 2000 watt generator. I need to give a boost to the batteries that power my propane refrigerator's electronics, as I do every fall (because the solar panel that charges the batts doesn't get as much sun).
So I'm reading the manual for the Champion, and it says, cf. charging 12v batteries: Only for car batteries; not for deep cycle batteries.
Can I take this as being over cautious? Should I use a charge controller rather than just connect direct to the terminals (talking about 2 6 volt batts in series parallel). I need advise from the battery brains!

It's charger is not meant for anything other than car batteries. You really need a proper charger unit, NOCO Genius makes good ones at reasonable prices, as does Shumacher (sp?).
I have a Multimodal charger that I got from Canadian Tire for my Motive Batteries which is a wonderful little charger and works a treat MotoMaster Eliminator Intelligent Battery Charger, 75/25/12/4A which has many features including de-sulfation. If your in the States you may find a similar one by another company.
My solar batteries are charged by the Controller but my Inverter is also a Charger, so it's a Combo Unit (Marine Type) which uses the Genny as shore power input.
Rereading what you wrote, you likely need a really good desulfation cycle on the batteries.

As previously noted, get yourself a stand alone dedicated battery charger. Much more efficient both in charging abilities and fuel consumption.

Yeah, it comes back to me (I'm getting old and my memory it shot). Okay. I will buy a Battery Charger. Dumb question of the day. I assume the input to such a batter charger is 120v? So I can run it off of the generator? Thanks for you patience.

I have the same Champion genny and charge my deep cycle battery with a Battery Tender Plus charger. No issues encountered.
Awesome cabin by the way.

Hi guys! Charger acquired; batts charged
easy peasy. Thanks sooo much to all who piped up (if I ask the same question again next year, remind me that the charger is in the cabinet on the porch  ).
I'm attaching a few shots of the cabin interior, as requested. Just after sunset so they're a little dark, but you'll get the drift. Loft too much of a mess to memorialize. Gotta say it's pretty cozy in here. *happy sigh*

Boy that is so cozy and snug, you just wanna snuggle up and relax there !
That Kitchen Table is  ! Last time I saw one like that with the painted top and little utility drawers on both ends was back in Pecs Hungary at the family vineyard many many moons ago. Fairly typical in Hungary, Poland etc but I haven't seen one like that in Canada... Ideas Churning....
