Hello SC Forum- I just joined and this is my first post.
I will be building a 16x24 cabin here in Wisconsin. My timbers are 4x6 and I have had them milled already and they are drying. Plan to start walls in May 2019. Wondering what people have done to prevent infestation of the logs/timbers. We do not have termites where I live, but there are bugs that enjoy a piece of pine. I was thinking of using a few bore holes in each timber and placing plain Borax in one and Boric Acid in another, or a mixture of each in each hole. Any thoughts/insights would be appreciated.

Well, you should definitely install a metal termite shield below the first log in the wall. Also keep the bottom of the log at least 18 inches above the ground. What type of foundation are you using?

Welcome Pabirk!
What part of the state will you be building in?
My wife and I hope to get our cabin build going in 2019 or 2020 in Marinette county.
What kind of timbers did you have milled? How/what style will you be building? (Trying to envision what type of exposure the timbers will have.)

Nate R: I am in Peshtigo...small world. I had red pine and a few white pines milled. They are 4" thick and 6" tall. Just going to do a simple butt and pass style. I bought a bunch of water based stain from Rymer last year as they were discontinuing that product.

Never thought about the metal shield on the first layer. I will be putting the foundation up on treated 6x6s about 3 feet off the ground.

Don't do anything that will attract bugs where you don't want them. I suggest putting the borax at the base of each foundation post. We used to put mouse poison in the camp where we thought they might congregate. They sure congregated and we put the stuff outside (in special containers so not to poison squirrels or other small animals) and basically solved the problem.

I restore log homes for a living,borat treat the logs then look at sashco transformation log and timber stain it has algeacide and pesticide in the stain.It is an oil base stain but trust me it works well

Can a guy just use Borax (like the 20 mule team stuff for laundry additive) or should I buy the Borate mix from a log home supplier>

I personally have experience with borate from log home suppliers,look into permachink and sashco products.They are the two big brand names in log home products for a reason.When I applicate borate I use a sprayer,but dont over saturate so when you apply stain it wont push through the stain and look blotchy.
