That is not exactly accurate. There is an active mining claim a few miles from our mountain property. There are myriad rules and regulations they must deal with. Obtaining a privy permit (in NM at least) was a lot simpler than the process the mining company went through.

Ask them what they will do if you do it anyway??? I bet they have know teeth when enforcing this. I would bet my last dollor they can't do anything about it. We are dealing with in my area and I asked the county this same question and they told me they have no teeth what so ever. They just try to get people to do thses things.

First build an outhouse, then invite the inspector up....give the inspector a cooky or snack (laced with exlax), then keep em busy for a few minutes and suddenly that outhouse will start looking pretty good, but don't let em use it till they sign off on it.....worth a try!
P.S. Keep a camera handy and don't put a lock on the door....one picture...great insurance!

My only question is, where do all the woodland creatures dispose of their manure? That stuff must be full of filth and pathogens than can harm the environment! Think of all the tickets they could pass out to deer, bear and bunnies for having the unmitigated gall of leaving piles of steaming crap laying about in the woods for who knows who to step in!

Hmm, I'm beginning to wonder about myself... sitting here reading the in's and out's of politically incorrect toilets and enjoying it. LOL! They say things once fashionable always make a comeback, so maybe it's time for a "two-seater" like my grandparents had. Ugh, would that make me an "upper class" cabin dweller? LOL!

Yes,tnky03,I agree,too.I don't get the paper and I can only get one news chanel on the tv.The news is always doom and gloom anyways so this is my idea of fun entertainment.

I believe that one of their big problems with enforcing the whole septic thing is water... If you claim that you won't dig a well and just catch some rain water = not have what they call "water under pressure" then they can't make you have a septic system... A septic system won't work without running water.
Try to throw that at them and see what they say.

Have already been told that "You can not even carry in a 5 gal. bucket of water and wash dishes, you have to have a septic". Ridiculous! We will maintain our RV (or get a smaller travel trailer) on the property. We have electric at pole to hook it up to, it is self-contained. Had planned to build a cabin nearby but have reconsidered and will just build an off grid "shed" farther back on property, in the woods, no septic, rain catchment, recycle gray water to flower beds, compost food scraps for garden, "other" compost to use on future orchard in a year or two. There are some challenges to the simple life... but I am finding the joys far outweigh them.  Maybe I can help free up the gov. so they can put their time to better use than monitoring my dishwater.

Anonymous, I'm in Wisconsin (Waupaca County) and see alot of sheds/ garages although one shed isaw suddenly disappeared. I foolishly built an 8x10 when i shouldhave built a 12x16 shed.
however, my neighbor tells me that any building not attached to foundation ie. on block pads, skids "does need permit" have u heard anything like that?

Buy a sani can, I bought a "Toughway 150 from Satellite Insudtries, new, was $700. But you will have to have it serviced once in a while.

Its true, but there is a max square footage. It can vary. If its over 200 sq feet and/or a permanent foundation, you need a permit in my state. That sq footage used to be 120, but they upped it to 200. Seems peopel just have more stuff and was building multiple sheds under the old limits.
If its a permanent foundation, you need a permit.

Purchase one of this privy lids for a 5 gal bucket. You can get privy bags for cheaper than dirt to deposit in. You canalso go in the bucket on top of sawdust then dump in the compost pile that you have over yonder. The bucket with bags are the appearance, the humanure system would be reality.

In waushara county you can build under 100 sq ft without a permit as long as it doesn't exceed 1000$ in market value and it follows all lot setbacks.
Even if you don't need a building permit for a shed you may still be required to get a zoning permit.
Getting that info took 2 minutes on the phone asking what permits if any I need to build a "small shed" on vacant land.
