I used them last fall when I got the sheathing down but only tarped for the winter. Had to pull up a few sheets to finish work underneath. The only way I can see to put them back would be to get them on one side, then get the plywood down, then bend the clips for the other side flat enough to slide in the gap and try to pound them back apart once in place.

Seems like trouble, not sure they do much anyway. 5/8 CDX.

With 5/8 and what you are doing I wouldn't worry unless the pitch is very low. Can you use a wood block under and screw thru from the top?

Clips are not needed on 16 inch OC framing...just 24 inch OC framing.

But they make the panel spacing easier. Handy on a sloped roof especially.

Edge spacing between panels.

OSB/plywood sheets should be spaced 1/8" apart when nailed to rafters or trusses. This is to prevent moisture changes causing expansion of the panels to the point where there may be buckling. Notice I said should, not must. The spacing is a recommendation from the APA, it is not an actual IRC requirement.

APA link

On the subject of spacing panels, when using T&G sheet materials (like for subflooring) the T&G joint is designed to leave a space between the top and bottom surfaces of the panels. I've seen people force the panels together tightly with big hammers and that defeats the manufacturers built in interference spacing.

I thought the nailing requirements of a panel was such that you wanted no movement on the panels. Nails every 6 inches on the perimeter and 8 in the field...I have never seen a panel move. Especially with the glue used in plywood and OSB, there should be no movement IMO.

Well I don't know. I'm using the clips so there's space. It's on 24 centers and low slope. I wish I had gone with 3/4 ply, or T&G, but having just carried and slotted the last of 70 sheets into place I'm not about to go back. Been thinking about going over it with 1/2..

Anyway I figured out that's it's a simple matter to bend one side of the clips flat, tap them in and pry them back apart on the bottom. I only need to do a handful.

I always use the clips, even on 16" OC, the spacing is the biggest deal and the cost for a bag of a bunch was $5.
