...um that is allowed under the OBC without a permit), or should I simply remain a weekend camper on the property? It should be noted that as in all Ontario communities that are regulated, an accessory building is not generally allowed unless there is a principal building on the lot. My fear is definitely that someone from the town will come and either fin...

Optimistic, I am in the processing of building my camp in Camden, NY and I have done everything myself so far. Just want to give you a warning when you look at the lot that since you are not an experienced builder I would be car...

...ario that I have owned for a few years now. Thus far I have camped on my property and have not built anything on it. My local municipality allows a shed, etc. that is maximum 108 sq. ft. without a building permit. I am planning on building a cabin that is barn style, approx. 10x10 ft, with a loft. I will buy it prefabbed and then modify it structur...

...ternet for that township does not include any reference to the RCA. But they do list a fairly complete list of names, phone numbers and (in some cases) e-mail address for contacts within the zoning, building code and sewage enforcment departments (see here: http://www.chestnuthilltwp-pa.gov/board.htm#Reception), so it should not be hard to get answers. If they do recognize the RCA, that...

...... will it work? I suspect it probably would. But you need to ask two more questions: 1. Is it legal? Absolutly not! 2. Will I get caught? That depends... most likely on what area you're building in, how remote your cabin location is, how much land you have and how well your neighbors like you. Sewer systems are getting more attention it the remote areas of PA than probabl...

...are always white. Always. Following that reasoning, the black wire in DC is always Positive. As in AC the ground wire in DC is always bare or green. No need for colored tape or markers. If you were building a car or a trailer, go ahead and use red for positive, black for negative. If this is a cabin, I'd suggest using the NEC convention. If a real electrician comes along sometime i...

...n, Hadn't thought about giving the stove its own air, but that's not a bad idea. The sauna will be dry. I didn't know there were "wet and dry" saunas until I asked about a building permit for the building. I was told if it's wet you need to connect to an approved septic system, and if it's dry, you need no pe...

...e scenerio is we all get herded into FEMA concentration camps. Yikes. An equally bad scenario is city dwellers who maintain a list of cabins to occupy WSHTF. WSHTF is another good reason to avoid a building permit. (If you can, like if the cabin is tiny) With a permit, the county publishes (on the internet!) the existence of your cabin, pics, sq footag...

I'm afraid the days of living free are nearly over, and will likely be gone before I get a chance to enjoy it. Building codes and permits and inspections are getting worse and more onerous in more and more places. And technology has already gotten to the point where you can be observ...

I love your cabin, may I ask who the basic log cabin builders is? I just bought 26 acres in Idaho, and am in the planning stages. Lucky for me the septic tank is already in, with building permit. I will be off grid, I have a spring fed pond. With a wood cook stove and generator plus a cast iron tub really all I need is help with the cabin. I am capabl...

792. Posted: 15 Feb 2012 23:58 - Cabin Construction / Square footage question.....
I am in the mental-planning stages of what kind of cabin to build on my new little piece of land. The county building code allows up to 200 sq ft before I need a permit. Can anyone tell me if a porch or deck is part of the square footage calculation? I wouldn't think so, but th...

I have a lot on an unserviced island on lake Moria, in Madoc Ontario. The ground cover is all rock with lots of trees, I have been looking here for info on gray water systems that will comply with building code. I have several hoops to jump through to get a building permit, but for the piece of mind it will be worth it. Cheers Jeff.

...at some acreages in North lower MI. found out it is zoned forest recreational. Called the zoning lady. I can build up to 250sqft floor area with a zoning permit but no inspection. Although you need a building permit for over 200 sqft. Seems odd? Also I can build a hunting/fishing cabin as long a it is not over 500sqft, it is not a residence, and I can not...

MO is our better option - no building permits or inspections in most rural areas.

They wanted to tear it down and rebuild it, but that size building is no longer permitted in the township. They have replaced every single bit of it as improvements and now have a 100% new polebarn larger than is a...

...ically, it is what it is. Most municipalities in Ontario seem to operate the same way. They don't want people camping on their properties (even though we own them) and you cannot build a 100 sq. building unless there is already a residence on the property (with septic, etc.). The approach some of us have taken is to get a few acres and try and stay under the radar. We're up on ...
