...e scenerio is we all get herded into FEMA concentration camps. Yikes. An equally bad scenario is city dwellers who maintain a list of cabins to occupy WSHTF. WSHTF is another good reason to avoid a building permit. (If you can, like if the cabin is tiny) With a permit, the county publishes (on the internet!) the existence of your cabin, pics, sq footag...

I'm afraid the days of living free are nearly over, and will likely be gone before I get a chance to enjoy it. Building codes and permits and inspections are getting worse and more onerous in more and more places. And technology has already gotten to the point where you can be observ...

I love your cabin, may I ask who the basic log cabin builders is? I just bought 26 acres in Idaho, and am in the planning stages. Lucky for me the septic tank is already in, with building permit. I will be off grid, I have a spring fed pond. With a wood cook stove and generator plus a cast iron tub really all I need is help with the cabin. I am capabl...

844. Posted: 15 Feb 2012 23:58 - Cabin Construction / Square footage question.....
I am in the mental-planning stages of what kind of cabin to build on my new little piece of land. The county building code allows up to 200 sq ft before I need a permit. Can anyone tell me if a porch or deck is part of the square footage calculation? I wouldn't think so, but th...

I have a lot on an unserviced island on lake Moria, in Madoc Ontario. The ground cover is all rock with lots of trees, I have been looking here for info on gray water systems that will comply with building code. I have several hoops to jump through to get a building permit, but for the piece of mind it will be worth it. Cheers Jeff.

847. Posted: 9 Feb 2012 06:41 - Properties / land zoned forest recreational... what can I get away with?
...at some acreages in North lower MI. found out it is zoned forest recreational. Called the zoning lady. I can build up to 250sqft floor area with a zoning permit but no inspection. Although you need a building permit for over 200 sqft. Seems odd? Also I can build a hunting/fishing cabin as long a it is not over 500sqft, it is not a residence, and I can not...

...tting too fancy as regards power lines. There isn't much for bridges around here. I called the State to ask what height and width needed special permits to move, and used those general ideas for building mine to avoid needing special permits, just oversize placards.

MO is our better option - no building permits or inspections in most rural areas.

...sonally build a complete cabin, roof and all inside if I did something like this. My parents bought a lot a couple years ago that has a 90x50 polebarn on it. They wanted to tear it down and rebuild it, but that size building is no longer permitted in the township. They have replaced every single bit of it as improvements and now have a 100% new polebarn larger than is a...

From what I have been reading on the forum there are more building permit, by-law, money grab nonsense goings on than any where else on the western hemisphere.     ...looking into purchasing an acre of land in Gravenhurst which is real close to Bracebridge and they seem to have the same kind of regulations. Developments fees are about 11,000 and then there's building permits on top of that which I have no idea how much they are. I asked what the development fees go to and I was told they cover the costs of you using the town such...

...ically, it is what it is. Most municipalities in Ontario seem to operate the same way. They don't want people camping on their properties (even though we own them) and you cannot build a 100 sq. building unless there is already a residence on the property (with septic, etc.). The approach some of us have taken is to get a few acres and try and stay under the radar. We're up on ...

I'm basing that answer of mine solely on the requirements of the IRC, the most commonly used building code in the USA. The only way to know for certain what the local official will enforce is to show them plans, even pencil sketches or simply have a conversation. The sticking point,...

In fact I found the 1998 building permit from our camp tacked to a tree in the woods shortly after we bought it. I kept it for sentimental reasons.

...ook around and see what others are doing locally. Find a local resident or a local builder, craftsman, tradesman and just quiz them on how they do things. In different parts of the the country some building things make sense and some do not. Be sure you know if your local area requires permits. Those can be a headache for some people. Good luck.
